### 洗手

> Washing Hands

以水盥掌 當願眾生 得清淨手 受持佛法

> When washing hands with water, I vow that all beings may gain pure hands and uphold the Dharma.

唵。主迦囉耶莎訶三徧

> Om. Jvala Maha Jvala Svaha <note>Recite three times</note>

若但小便時。唯用水洗手一次即淨。若是大便去穢後洗手。或用灰泥皂角。如法洗之△溪堂雜錄云。元祐中。有蜀僧智超法師。嘗誦華嚴經。已三十年。偶見一童子。風貌清爽。舉手高揖。超曰何來。曰五臺來。超曰何遠至此。曰有少事欲相導故。超曰願聞。曰吾師誦經故可嘉矣。但失在登廁洗淨時。穢水淋其手背。而未嘗用灰泥洗之。所用灰泥。律制七度。今但二三。緣此觸尚有。禮佛誦經悉皆得罪。言訖不見。超慙而改過。識者或曰。此必文殊化現。有警於超也。故知洗手必須依法。因果經云。觸手請經。當獲廁中蟲報。

> <note>If you only urinate, washing your hands once with water is enough to be clean. But after a bowel movement, when washing away the filth, you should use ash, mud, or soap pod and wash according to the proper method. The Xitang Miscellaneous Records says: During the Yuanyou era, there was a monk from Shu named Master Zhichao who had been reciting the Flower Garland Sutra for thirty years. One day he suddenly saw a youth of fresh and clear appearance, who raised his hands and bowed deeply. Zhichao asked, "Where do you come from?" He said, "From Mount Wutai." Zhichao asked, "Why have you come so far?" He said, "I have a small matter I wish to point out to you." Zhichao said, "I would like to hear it." He said, "Your recitation of the sutra is truly admirable. But your fault lies in not washing clean after using the toilet: filthy water splashes onto the backs of your hands, and you have never used ash or mud to wash them. The amount of ash and mud used is prescribed by the Vinaya as seven times, but now you use only two or three. Because of this, the impurity remains, and whenever you bow to the Buddha or recite the sutra, you incur offense." Having said this, he disappeared. Zhichao was ashamed and corrected his fault. Some who knew said, "This must have been a manifestation of Manjushri, warning Zhichao." Thus we know that washing the hands must be done according to the rules. The Sutra of Cause and Effect says: If one touches \[sacred items\] with unwashed hands and then asks for sutras, one will receive the retribution of being born as a worm in a latrine.</note>
