(Sanskrit "niṣīdana." In Chinese, this is called a sitting cloth. It is also called a "wherever-you-sit robe," and also called a "foot-mat cloth." It is two and a half hand-spans of the Buddha in length and two hand-spans of the Buddha in width. The Mahāsāṃghika Vinaya says: one hand-span of the Tathāgata is two feet four inches—this is by the smaller measure. By the standard larger measure, it may be reckoned as two feet. It must not be made into the three robes. It must not be formally relinquished[for others] or used for gathering firewood, grass, or miscellaneous things. It may only be spread for sitting. If traveling on the road, when arriving at a sitting place, one takes it and sits on it. The Sarvāstivāda Vinaya says: if new, two layers; if old, four layers. One should not accept a single-layer niṣīdana. In the Vinaya, the original origin story of the rule was for the sake of the body, for the sake of robes, and for the sake of bedding. The Vinaya Commentary says: "for the sake of the body" means fearing that sitting on the ground may cause injury. Next, "for the sake of robes" means fearing that without something underneath, the three robes would easily be damaged. "For the sake of bedding" means fearing that an unclean body would soil the saṅgha's beds and couches. Therefore the Vinaya says: for a new niṣīdana, and for an old one, edge it on the four sides with variegated colors. If making one, one should attach a border. The Five-Part Vinaya says: cut it into three parts; the long head leaves one part; paste [the remaining parts] at the four corners; if not pasting, then leave it. In the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya and the Record of Travels, it is not permitted to use it spread out for bowing. In the Western Regions and the five regions of India, this was rarely seen or heard of. In this land, it is spread out for bowing, and it is unknown when this practice began to be transmitted. If one follows the sagely regulations, not using it is correct. If discussing it as a robe, spreading it for bowing is not harmful. Having examined this in detail, students may follow their convenience.)
