> Record of Zen Master Wumen Kai's Dharma Talks at Huzhou Baoyin Zen Temple<note>Master Yuelin, the founder, is noted as the second generation</note>

> Attendant Pujing, recorder

> The master entered the monastery on the ninth day of the fifth month in the eleventh year of the Jiading era. Pointing to the three gates, he said: "What the father and son do not transmit, there is nothing at all. Meeting on a narrow path, pushing open the door, the mortar falls."

> In the Buddha hall, to bow is to bow. Not to bow is also to bow. The yellow-faced Gautama is beneath my feet.

> At the base, mountains encircle the sacred burial ground, waters wind around the blessed resting place. Within the words, there is resonance; beneath the phrases, clarity is revealed.

> The Dharma seat. One move rises higher, one step reaches farther. Pushing past the barrier above, the whole universe reveals itself. He then ascended the seat. After offering incense and making prayers for the emperor, he took up more incense and said: "This incense—if you lay eyes on it, your eyes will dry up; if you smell it, your forehead will split open. Clearly presented, it burns in the furnace, offered to the former master, the venerable Monk Yuelin of Wuhui, who previously resided at Wanshou in Pingjiang. Not to repay kindness or show gratitude, but to blunt and humble myself alongside him." He then sat in full lotus posture. <note>The dialogue is not recorded.</note> He said: "In years past, I once went into the mountains—even the thousand-armed Mahākaruṇika could not hold me back. Today, I again come into the mountains—the udumbara flower blooms open in the sky. Coming and going, each clearly discerned. Today and years past, every point fits the track. Thus it is said: 'One only knows the person of old times, not the path where the old person walked.' At just such a moment, tell me—how do you speak a single phrase that does not involve coming or going? Seated long on the rocky slab at night, one wisp of clear incense disperses in the moonlit grove." He continued: "A thatched hut in deep mountain solitude—but the donors could not help seeking me out. Having settled what the former master left unsettled, my reputation for being troublesome now fills the whole monastery."

> The Master ascended the hall and cited a monk's question to Yunmen: "When the trees wither and leaves fall, what then?" Yunmen replied, "The body is exposed to the golden wind." The Master commented: "That monk spoke with his heart laid bare; Yunmen showed his very essence. I too have a verse to offer all of you: Trees wither, leaves fall— The body exposed to the golden wind. If you still ask, 'What then?' Your eyes are blind, your ears are deaf."

> The master ascended the hall and said: "In stillness, observe the workings of activity; in activity, observe the workings of stillness. When stillness and activity are both overturned, one acts with the true command—like a long sword leaning against the sky, its cold edge pressing close, chilling all who approach."

> The master ascended the hall. Citing the Fifth Patriarch, Master Yan, who addressed the assembly, saying: "Autumn clouds and autumn waters linger together; the cries of frontier geese pass through the green hills. Many head toward the grassy shores of Lake Dongting, yet the vast Chu sky knows no return." The master said, "Great assembly, what does Patriarch Yan intend by speaking thus? And what of today's gathering here, where I, Baoyin, meet with the waters and clouds, each sound responding to another? In the end, waters must flow to the sea; at last, clouds will surely seek the mountains to return."
