> Longxing Prefecture Tianning Chan Monastery Discourse Records

> Attendant Pu Tong (Recorded)

> Three Gates. At the bustling marketplace entrance, there is a single phrase: wave your hand and leave Zhang River; your whole body is right there within it.

> I bow to the ancient sage in the Buddha hall. Shouldering my burden, I step into the bustling world. After lighting incense and bowing three times, I walk between heaven and earth, among the realms of gods and men.

> The land—where does spirit come from? Where does holiness arise? The five supernatural powers and the six powers: not that, not that. Today, how does Tianning point the way? Burning incense, he said: "Bring them together with ritual."

> The abbot, holding up his staff, said: "Amidst the bustling market and dusty world, one must extend a helping hand. The moment thoughts arise, strike at once and seize."

> Take up the Buddha's words. The Master's eyes— Gotama's way, Not crafty verses or ornate prose, Nor the world's codes of virtue. Let all listen closely, together.

> The Dharma seat. It levels the great earth. It rises above empty space. Shakyamuni and Maitreya both stand in its shadow. Then he ascended the seat. After offering blessings for the emperor,<note>Questions and answers are not recorded</note> he said: At the crossroads of busy streets, in tiny villages of three households—seeking stillness amid noise, stealing leisure from busyness. Before the Pavilion of Layered Peaks, green bamboo draws the cool breeze. Beneath the Prince Teng Pavilion, the long river bathes in bright moonlight. If you can understand it this way, both the Buddha's teaching and worldly affairs are right before your eyes. If not—how laughable that Lecturer Liang of old, once gone to the western mountains, was never heard from again. He then cited the verse presented by Minister Wu Zhuangyuan: "A clapper in hand, a mallet in sleeve—I win a round of play wherever I go. A message for Master Wumen who opens the Way: pack your bundle and come down from the mountain." This mountain monk presumes to offer a verse in reply: "Eyes like nostrils, mouth like a mallet—busy karmic consciousness, called back in vain. The southern shore and western hills not yet fully tilled, again you come, wearing fur and bearing horns."

> The Master took the podium and cited Linji’s teaching to the assembly: “The four elements and the physical body do not understand speaking or listening to the Dharma. The spleen, stomach, liver, and gallbladder do not understand speaking or listening to the Dharma. Empty space does not understand speaking or listening to the Dharma.” The Master said: “Master Linji spoke in this way, much like chewing food to feed a baby. Yet even so, let me ask: who is it that truly understands speaking and listening to the Dharma? If you can realize this point right here, your study of the Path is complete. If not, you will have to wait until the future to ask Maitreya.”

> Mid-Autumn Festival address to the assembly: At Mount Ling, they spoke of the moon. At Caoxi, they pointed to the moon. Hanshan compared it to the moon. All the Buddhas and patriarchs from the past exhausted their flaws in this. But Tianning here is not like that. I have a verse to offer the assembly: In pitch-black sky and dim earth, one sees truly— Would they chase after light and shadow, toying with delusion? This old monk’s fist, within death, brings life— The Buddha and all sentient beings are swallowed in one gulp.

> Upon the invitation of Huanglong, the Master took leave of the assembly and ascended the hall, saying: "Do not distinguish between the marketplace and the mountains— Observe with discerning eyes whether in stillness or in clamor, in leisure or in busyness. When both stillness and clamor are utterly transcended, Like a pearl rolling swiftly upon a golden tray."
