> Lingyan Xianqin Chongbao Chan Temple Discourse Record

> Recorded by Attendant Liaoxin

> Abbot, the blazing flames stretch across the sky, and the surging waves roll to the very depths. The moment you blink, the sword has already been gone for a long time.

> Ascending the seat and making the offering of reverence to the sage,<note>The exchange of questions and answers is not recorded.</note> then he spoke: "The Buddhas appearing in the world—this is an old, settled case. The Patriarchs coming from the West—this is stirring waves where there is no wind. The twenty-eight patriarchs in India and the twenty-three in China—they spoke of the yellow and pointed at the black, but in truth, they grew further and further from the point. Today, I, Upper Seated Kai, will try to sweep it all away completely." After a long pause, he said: "However great a thing may be, it must still rise from the ground. And however high it climbs, what can it do against the heavens?" Then he brought up a case: Zen Master Fayen once said to the assembly, "There is an unresolved case from my late teacher." The master said: "The eyes watch the southeast, the mind intends the northwest—this is not with Fayen. That monk is mud wrapped in thorns. Gratitude turns into grievance, and in the end, neither can settle it. Today, if someone suddenly asks Lingyan, 'What about the unresolved case of your late teacher? How will you settle it?' I would just tell them: 'I have no such idle time.'"

> The Master took the high seat. He cited the story of Great Master Ji of Mount Song: A monk asked, "What does a person of great spiritual practice look like?" The answer was, "They carry a cangue and wear chains." Then the monk asked, "What does a person of great karmic deeds look like?" The answer was, "They cultivate meditation and enter deep concentration." The Master commented: "Master Ji, in praising a skilled hand like this, unknowingly fell into a tight encirclement. That monk's sudden ascent to the heavens in broad daylight was indeed cause for celebration. But today, if someone were to suddenly ask Lingyan, 'What does a person of great spiritual practice look like?' I would only say to them: 'A mature person is never at ease.' And if asked about a person of great karmic deeds, I would say: 'One who is at ease never matures.' If someone abruptly asked beyond these two paths, how should this be understood? I would merely say to them: 'Sulu Sulu.'"

> The master took the pulpit and brought up a case: A monk asked Baizhao, "What is the practice of all virtues?" Baizhao replied, "There isn't even a peach pit this year—why speak of rotten apricots?" The monk then asked, "What is wondrous enlightenment?" Baizhao said, "If it's a wondrous medicine, show me a dose." The monk responded, "I'm not asking about that." Baizhao said, "Then what are you asking?" The monk replied, "Wondrous enlightenment." Baizhao said, "If it's soap, I'll hand it to the bath attendant." The master commented, "Tell me, what was Baizhao's intention?"

> The master ascended the hall and said: "Spring mountains pile up in layers of green, Spring waters ripple in vast azure, Spring light leaks out fully— Who truly recognizes the message of spring? An old withered tree sprouts new branches again, Shaking the spring breeze to the eight extremes of the world." He struck the staff once.

> The Master ascended the hall and said: "Two-thirds of our time has already passed too quickly. A cow in Huaizhou eats the grain, while the single point of spiritual light in our minds remains unpolished. A horse in Yizhou suffers from a swollen belly, and we chase after life day by day, busily going nowhere. When the whole world seeks a physician, they call out but no one turns back—what can be done? They cauterize a pig's left shoulder. If you can grasp this point right here, your journey of inquiry is complete. If not—" He picked up his staff and said, "Let Elder Wood here explain it fully for you all." Then he struck the ground once with the staff.
