> Record of Longxing Fu Cuiyan Guanghua Chan Monastery

> Attendant, Universal Worship, Recorded

> Three gates. Turn the mysterious barrier. In a snap of the fingers—watch: from flat ground, wind and clouds arise. The gate is near a thousand-foot well at the Red Cliff.

> At the Temple of King Qi'an, offering incense, it is said: Within the chamber of the dead heart, one moves the body, one moves the steps. Day after day, incense and lamps; morning after morning, words fall away. I bow my head to King Qi'an— an iron serpent stretches across the great road.

> Ascending the seat. After offering prayers for the emperor's well-being,<note>Dialogue inquiries omitted</note> he then said: The mind is not Buddha. Wisdom is not the Path. Towering rises the western mountain; vast stretches the southern river. Thus and thus—Cuìyán has already spared no effort in speaking. Not thus, not thus—do not block my path to the goal. Raising his staff, he said: Look, Master Liang! Right now, upon the tip of this staff, the great Dharma is being expounded. He struck the ground once and said: Do you all hear it? If not, he struck again. Shouldering his staff horizontally, heedless of others, he strode straight into a thousand peaks and ten thousand ridges. Then he cited the case of Layman Wujin, Minister Zhang Gong, who one day visited the mountain and asked Master Ji, a seeker of the Way: What is the scene of Cuìyán? Ji replied: Near the gate, a thousand-foot well by Hóngyá; the stone bridge parts the waters, circling pines and firs. Layman Wujin then composed a verse: A mountain monk greets guests, descending from misty peaks; asked, what is Cuìyán's scene? Near the gate, a thousand-foot well by Hóngyá; the stone bridge parts the waters, circling pines and firs. The master said: Master Ji presented the scene as a living reality; Minister Zhang took it as a mere description of scenery. After a thousand generations, neither truly understood. If today someone were to ask me, Kaidao, what is the scene of Cuìyán? I would simply tell them: Near the gate, a thousand-foot well by Hóngyá; the stone bridge parts the waters, circling pines and firs. Let those with discerning eyes recognize it.

> The Master took the seat and said, "Have done with all distinctions. The thief is caught, but the family is ruined. The cliff stands ten thousand fathoms high, yet an old woman's heart is anxious. When I, this mountain monk, am muddled, I am utterly muddled. When I am clear, I am extremely clear. Great assembly, tell me: is it the muddled one or the clear one that matters? A heart that does not deceive others shows no shame on the face."

> The master took the high seat and said: "Time passes quickly—two of three parts are already gone. Spring waters fill the four marshes. The single point of the spirit remains unpolished. Summer clouds form strange peaks. Greedily chasing days, we hurry on, step by step. The autumn moon shines with clear radiance. If you don't turn back when called, what can be done? On winter ridges, a lone pine stands tall. Everyone, Master Xuedou's three hundred sixty bones and joints have been entirely shaken out by Cuìyán today. If you understand this here, the staff in my hand has not yet reached you for a beating. Why? Weeping until blood flows serves no purpose—better to keep silent and pass the remaining spring."

> At the Dharma assembly on Nirvana, the teacher said: "All formations are impermanent — this is the Dharma of arising and ceasing. When arising and ceasing cease, the stillness that remains is true joy." The yellow-faced elder (the Buddha) spent forty-nine years and held over three hundred assemblies, and in the end, he finally revealed the final truth. But later generations of followers strayed into wrong views and evil ways — none of them stood up for him. Today, this distant descendant of Cuiyan has overturned that old verdict. He struck the staff once. "Hmm, hmm."

> Venerable Xie Jiuxi ascended the hall and said, "Spring mountains pile up layered green; spring waters ripple in empty blue. In this vast world between heaven and earth, who else could truly know me?" The master said, "Everyone, this Great Snow Dou Ancestral Master is narrow-minded and ill-informed, knowing only himself. Cuìyán, however, is not like this. Spring mountains pile up layered green; spring waters ripple in empty blue. In this vast, silent world between heaven and earth, all eyes are filled with acquaintances." Then he asked, "Tell me, who is the one who truly understands the mind?" "How laughable—Jiuxi could not be kept; instead, he comes to Hongjing to stir up waves and billows."

> Master Xie Bingfu addressed the assembly: "All Buddhas and World-Honored Ones speak of the One Vehicle Path. This entire assembly should now cast aside all doubt. Shakyamuni, the Old Man, fully revealed the whole truth two thousand years ago—but sadly, no one understood. Thus, five thousand withdrew from their seats. Though later generations of descendants have been few, many still pass right by it face-to-face. Therefore it is said: to understand such a matter, one must be such a person. Great assembly, you wish to understand such a matter? Then ask the first seat in this hall."

> Clear Brightness Festival address. During the third month's Qingming, when smoking is forbidden, peach blossoms carry rain and seem twice as fresh. Everyone says that on that day Lingyun attained enlightenment, breaking into a laugh that split the meditators' mouths half open. Among this assembly, is there anyone who can speak up for Lingyun? Let me ask you: where exactly is the point at which he had no doubt left?

> The master addressed the assembly: "This morning, on the tenth day of the third month, the drum has been struck and Zen students have gathered completely. If you wish to understand the season and its causes and conditions—when rain falls, the step before the hall naturally becomes wet. If you understand, return each to your own hall. If you don't, why trouble yourselves standing long?"

> The master ascended the hall and cited a monk's question to Master Fengxue: "When words and silence touch the subtle realms of leaving and entering, how can one communicate without transgression?" Fengxue said, "I always recall the third month in Jiangnan—where partridges cry, a hundred flowers bloom with fragrance." The master said, "Everyone. Master Fengxue only knew how to open his mouth, not realizing his words had fallen." Today, if someone were to suddenly ask Cuiyan, "When words and silence touch the subtle realms of leaving and entering, how can one communicate without transgression?" He struck the ground once with his staff.

> The Master addressed the assembly, saying: "Baizhang had three essential teachings: drink tea, take care, and rest. Cuìyán does not follow Baizhang's example of drawing a snake and adding feet to it." He then struck the whisk.

> The master ascended the hall and cited the teaching of Zifu, who said to the assembly: "If you see the flagpole across the river and turn back, you deserve thirty blows. How much more so if you cross the river!" Just then a monk stepped forward, and Zifu said, "Not worth speaking with." He then returned to his quarters. The master commented: "Zifu's placement was somewhat precarious, but his withdrawal was too hasty. As for Cuiyan, it is not so. If one sees the flagpole across the river and turns back, I would not strike such a dullard. Even if one crosses the river, I would still not strike such a dullard. If someone in the assembly should say, 'Seeing the flagpole and turning back—let that be. But why not strike the one who crosses the river? Such a dullard!'—I would say to him, 'Then I grant that you have one eye.'"

> Addressing the assembly before leaving for Huanglong, the master cited Great Fool (Dayu)和尚's teaching to the assembly: "The path to Cuiyan is treacherous and steep; each step climbs the stairs. Beyond, there is the waters of the Hongyuan, flowing endlessly west of the ridge." The master then said, "Great assembly, this great patriarch is seated right here. But I, Wumen, see it differently: The path to Cuiyan is utterly without peril; it never involves climbing stairs. Coming and going, there is no obstruction; between here and there, what doubt remains? Treasure the assembly, vast as lakes and seas—within this, not a hair's breadth separates."
