This sutra belongs to the Esoteric category, recording the Buddha's teaching on the method of preparing sesame oil and its religious applications, emphasizing the special merit of this oil in offering rituals. The text elaborates in detail a practice using sesame oil as a medium, including mantras, ritual procedures, and methods of recitation, reflecting the characteristic early Esoteric emphasis on combining material offerings with spiritual cultivation.

Sutra on Sesame Oil as Spoken by the Buddha

The Buddha was residing in the Magadha Kingdom, in the Isadhara Mountains. At that time, his son Rahula was staying with him in the mountains. One night, as Rahula lay sleeping, he was startled awake by a spirit disturbing him. The next morning, he went to the Buddha, paid his respects, and then sat down beneath a tree to one side. Resting his cheek in his hand, he lowered his head, looking unhappy and silent.

The Buddha then asked Rahula, “Why are you sitting with your head bowed, as if frightened?”

Rahula replied, “Last night while I was sleeping, a spirit disturbed me.”

The Buddha said to Rahula, “In this world, sometimes living people disturb others, sometimes mountain spirits disturb people, sometimes spirits dwelling by roadsides or ditches disturb people, and sometimes spirits of those who died peacefully come to test practitioners, to frighten them with spiritual teachings, wishing to know whether their minds are firm or weak.”

The Buddha said to Rahula, “Take this Buddha-taught incantation for warding off spirits. If in the future any spirit comes to disturb you, recite the name of that spirit with a mind of loving-kindness.”

The Buddha said: "This Tantra Sutra is the Sutra of Compassion that the Buddha established for his disciples." The Buddha told his disciples: "When in urgent need, one should recite it. If ghosts or spirits come to disturb a person, one should hold a mind of loving-kindness, a mind of compassion, and a mind of purity, then turn inward to contemplate the five viscera and reflect upon them. When the Buddha spoke this sutra, even the sun and moon may fall to earth, but the Buddha's words will never be false. Now the Buddha speaks this Tantra Sutra, so that living beings who wish to disturb others cannot disturb them; mountain spirits cannot disturb them; spirits by the roadside and ditches cannot disturb them; spirits of those who died by violence cannot disturb them; spirits of those who died peacefully cannot disturb them. Hearing these words, fire will not burn, poisoned food will not harm, blades intended to kill will not strike, and one will not drown in deep water. If four people together walk in a deserted place, or travel through towns, great kingdoms, gatherings, large assemblies, among elders, companions, while walking, sitting, or lying down—if they encounter practitioners of harmful sorcery, facing them and reciting this sutra, the harmful sorcery will not succeed." The Buddha then instructed Rahula to teach it, having Rahula ensure that all bhikkhus, bhikkhunis, upasakas, upasikas, and laypeople memorize and recite it.
