Postscript to the Re-Engraving of the Consciousness-Only Introductory Enlightenment
The Tathagata employs the four methods of explanation to guide beings. Although the net of teachings is manifold, their essential direction does not go beyond the two schools of Essence and Characteristics. When Characteristics merge with Essence, they avoid the fault of fragmentation. When Essence is revealed through Characteristics, there is ultimately no risk of vagueness. Thus, even if different traditions diverge like separate rivers, they still illuminate together like the sun and moon.
Since Maitreya received Gautama's entrustment, Vasubandhu grasped its key. Master Xuanzang inherited the tradition from Shilabhadra, and Cien elucidated its mysteries. The sublime principle of perfect realization shone brightly in China. As time passed and errors crept in, the ancient commentaries were lost. Yet a single thread remained unbroken, relying on two volumes of introductory texts. These, too, were long out of circulation, rarely seen by anyone.
Thus, the venerable Xuehang resolved to raise funds for reprinting. He also invited the learned Lingyuan to organize the outline, and Chen Jiwu to correct errors. The funding and supervision of the printing were accomplished through the efforts of Wang Yuanjian, Wang Ruzhi, and Yang Cibian. When the printing was completed, they asked me to record the circumstances from beginning to end, to inform future readers.
May all who encounter this text develop a rare and profound reverence, firmly cultivate the sublime and perfect consciousness Samadhi, and at the future Dragon Flower Assembly, this will surely serve as the true cause for receiving the prophecy of enlightenment.
