問。云何唯識。
Question: What is meant by "Consciousness-Only"?
答。心外無法。故曰唯識。
Answer. There is no reality outside the mind. Therefore, it is called "consciousness-only."
難曰。山河大地六塵境界。分明在外。何言心外無法邪。
Objection: The mountains, rivers, earth, and all the sensory realms are clearly external. How can you say there is nothing outside the mind?
答曰。山河等者。心相分也。實不在外。
The answer is: Mountains, rivers, and all such things are merely appearances within the mind. They do not truly exist outside of it.
問。何理知之。
Question: How can we know this to be true?
答。相見俱依。自證起故。
請說所以。
答。謂心體者。名自證分。自證體上有二功用。一能緣用謂之見分。二所緣用謂之相分。攝用歸體。唯一自證分。此山河等是心相分故不在外。
問。有如何者。請喻示之。
答曰。如蝸牛頭幻生二角。出則似二。縮則一頭。
