Weishi Kaimeng Wenda (唯識開蒙問答)

Commentaries and Expositions

Question: How should we explain the title of this treatise or commentary?

Answer. If "Achievement" (成) refers to the means of accomplishment, it belongs to the word "Treatise" (論). "The Achievement of Consciousness-Only" (唯識之成) or "The Treatise on the Achievement of Consciousness-Only" (成唯識之論) is explained as a Dependent-Master Compound (依主釋). Alternatively, if the Treatise itself has the function of accomplishment, then the function follows the substance; "Achievement" (成) is then identical to "Treatise" (論), forming a Descriptive Compound (持業釋). If "Achievement" refers to the object of accomplishment, it belongs to "Consciousness-Only" (唯識); "Consciousness-Only" is itself the achievement (唯識即成), or the object of accomplishment is "Consciousness-Only," forming a Descriptive Compound.

Question: The word "treatise" only pertains to capability, while "consciousness-only" pertains to objects. Treatises have fundamental and derivative aspects; what treatise enables this realization?

Answer. Both the fundamental and the derivative can serve as the means of completion. If the fundamental treatise is the means, then the Buddhist scriptures on Consciousness-Only are what is completed. If the derivative treatise is the means, then the fundamental treatise on Consciousness-Only is what is completed.

Answer. One should use the teachings to complete the truth.

Why is that?
