Chapter 7: Accomplishment

Furthermore, the practitioner should persist in focused recitation with diligence and unwavering effort. Even when their desired aims are achieved through dedicated practice, they must remain constantly attentive. Why is this? Because all manner of extremely evil ghosts and spirits, driven by their own negative karma, do not wish to see practitioners succeed. If the practitioner does succeed, that sacred mantra’s power and presence—whether for hundreds or thousands of miles—prevents these demons and spirits from daring to draw near. They think, “This practitioner, in this life and the next, will bring no benefit to us.” Therefore, the practitioner must always be vigilant.

Consider this: It is like a warrior clad in armor, mounted on an elephant, and equipped with a bow, arrows, and various weapons as they enter a great battlefield. When their enemies see such formidable strength, they scatter and flee, with none daring to stand against them. Likewise, if a reciting practitioner always maintains their practice without fault, and does not violate even minor precepts, then—comparing precepts to armor, the mantra to bow and arrows, and courage to riding the elephant—evil ghosts and spirits will not dare to draw near, in exactly the same way.

Furthermore, those who seek to attain the power of the Vetala should search for an intact corpse in a charnel ground. The corpse must be complete in all its parts, bearing the form of a full-grown male. One must not use a corpse that is hunched, lame, disfigured, or otherwise unattractive. Neither an extremely fat nor extremely thin corpse, nor one with any imperfection, nor even the corpse of a man lacking the highest or middle-grade qualities, is suitable. Only a corpse bearing the highest-grade marks is best.

Moreover, one must not use a corpse that died from breath-related illness, malaria, dysentery, malignant sores, or from being bitten by snakes or insects—whether on land or in water—whose venom spread through the body causing foaming at the mouth before death. Any such corpse is unsuitable.

Once a suitable corpse is chosen, an assistant must guard it with a staff, watching over it from morning until nightfall. One may then perform the rites either at that same charnel ground, or else seek an empty house, a lonely tree, a crossroads, a springside, or a jewel mountain. If such an excellent location is found, the Vetala will swiftly grant success.

After finding a pleasant and delightful spot in a truly noble land, purify the ground according to the proper ritual. Once the ground is cleansed, mix pure earth with clay and cow dung, and apply the mixture. Then, using five superior powders—blue, red, white, black, and yellow—create a Mandala. I have already explained the various names of these Mandalas. Choose one of them to draw.

Place four precious vases within the Mandala, each filled with water. Alternatively, you may use bitter water. Fill the vases and insert branches of seasonal flowers or various other blossoms.

Once the Mandala is completed, have your assistant develop a courageous mind, free from fear. First, shave the corpse’s hair. Then, bathe it with water from the precious vases to purify it. After bathing, anoint it with oil. Once oiled, dress it in fine white garments.

When this is done, spread auspicious grass and scatter various flowers within the Mandala. Have the assistant carry the corpse and lay it in the Mandala, either with the head pointing east or north, in accordance with the ritual. Then, offer incense, fragrant flowers, garlands, wine, meat, and various foods as offerings. If you cannot provide an elaborate offering, offer as much as you are able.

Then, recite the core mantra of the deity clan that corresponds to this Mandala. Have faith in and reverently honor the primary deity of this mantra clan. Follow the ritual carefully and concentrate single-mindedly on recitation to achieve success.

Additionally, there will be obstructing spirits, ghosts, and nagas lurking everywhere. First, scatter offerings to the four cardinal directions, the four intermediate directions, as well as above and below, to appease these obstructing spirits, ghosts, and nagas. Then, recite a mantra to protect yourself and your assistant, so that these obstacles cannot draw near. Only then should you continue reciting to achieve success.

If, during the recitation, the corpse displays evil signs, know that this is the work of obstructing demons. Once you have recognized this, take white mustard seeds and ashes, recite the mantra of the Uṣṇīṣa King, and throw them at the corpse’s face. Through the great power of this mantra, all obstructing entities will scatter in all directions. Once they have departed, the corpse will lie peacefully as before.

"If a corpse stands upright without any signs of evil, then know that the power of the true mantra is at work, and the desired outcome will be achieved without doubt. When this occurs, you must be firm in your own resolve. Whatever the practitioner initially wished for will be revealed one by one at this moment—whether it be seeking hidden treasures, entering an Asura cave to obtain sacred medicine, riding a sword, acquiring eye medicine, subduing spirits, or even gaining a king's favor; all such matters can be accomplished. The practitioner must always cultivate the highest conduct, using the great power of the true mantra for self-protection, in order to succeed in the practice of the Vetaṇḍa method. Why is this so? For example, although a fierce beast is powerful, it lacks wisdom and can be harmed by wicked people. Likewise, if a practitioner does not uphold the highest conduct or fails to protect themselves, they will be vulnerable to attack by evil demons and hindrances."
