Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramit (金剛般若疏)

Preface to the Diamond Sutra

Composed by Master Huijizang

The Diamond Sutra of Perfect Wisdom is the clear light of the three contemplations and the profound essence of ultimate reality. In the past, within the groves of sages, this luminous jewel had not yet shone; now, in the garden of the Elder, this sweet dew is being sprinkled. It is truly because those of lesser aspiration first opened their minds that they earlier raced with the sheep and deer; only when the great mind arises does one ride this white ox. This is the supreme model of the true teaching, the bright instruction for all beings. It is not cloud nor rain, yet its virtue moistens all four kinds of life; it is not sun nor moon, yet its radiance illuminates the three realms. It unites all practices as the great ocean receives all streams; it sweeps away confusion and difference as the winter frost withers the hundred grasses.

If we were to preserve the original Sanskrit title, it should be called "Vajra Prajñā Pāramitā Sūtra." In this land, it is translated as "The Sutra on the Diamond-like Wisdom That Reaches the Other Shore." The sutra clarifies that there is no bondage it does not shatter—thus it is called "Diamond." There is no realm it does not illuminate—thus it is named "Wisdom." It eternally transcends duality—thus it is termed "Reaching the Other Shore." As for "Sutra," it means "teaching" and "eternal truth."
