夫目錄之興也。蓋所以別真偽明是非。記人代之古今。標卷部之多少。摭拾遺漏刪夷駢贅。欲使正教綸理金言有緒。提綱舉要歷然可觀也。但以法門幽邃化網恢弘。前後翻傳年移代謝。屢經散滅卷軸參差。復有異人時增偽妄。致令混雜難究蹤由。是以先德儒賢製斯條錄。今其存者殆六七家。然猶未極根源尚多疎闕。昇以庸淺久事披尋。參練異同指陳臧否。成茲部帙。庶免乖違。幸諸哲人俯共詳覽。
The compilation of catalogs arose from the need to distinguish truth from falsehood, clarify right from wrong, record the historical progress of different eras, indicate the number of scrolls and sections, collect what had been omitted or scattered, and remove repetitions and redundancies. The aim was to ensure that the true teachings were properly organized and the sacred words coherent, with clear outlines and key points presented in an orderly manner for easy understanding.
However, the Dharma is profound and vast, and the net of transformation is far-reaching. Over time, translations and transmissions were made in different periods and by different hands. With the passage of years and dynasties, many texts were lost or damaged, leading to inconsistencies in the number of scrolls and volumes. Moreover, some individuals sporadically added spurious and false material, causing confusion that made it difficult to trace their origins. Therefore, past virtuous scholars and wise men created these catalogs and records. Today, perhaps six or seven such works remain, yet they still fail to fully explore the roots and often contain omissions and errors.
I, Sheng, though shallow and mediocre, have long devoted myself to studying and comparing these texts, examining similarities and differences, pointing out what is good and what is flawed, and have compiled this collection. I hope to avoid further mistakes and discrepancies, and I humbly invite knowledgeable readers to examine it thoroughly.
稽首善逝牟尼尊 無上丈夫調御士
亦禮三乘淨妙法 并及八輩應真僧
我撰經錄護法城 三寶垂慈幸冥祐
惟願法燈長夜照 迷徒因此得慧明
正法遐久住世間 依學速登無上地
I bow to the Blessed One, the Sage, The unsurpassed guide who tames all beings.
I also honor the pure, wondrous Dharma of the Three Vehicles, And the eightfold assembly of true practitioners.
I compile this scripture catalog to protect the Dharma realm, May the Three Jewels grant their compassionate, subtle blessing.
May the Dharma lamp shine through the long night, So that those who have lost their way may gain wisdom's light.
May the True Dharma long remain in the world, And by following its teachings, swiftly reach the highest ground.
自後漢孝明皇帝永平十年歲次丁卯。至大唐神武皇帝開元十八年庚午之歲。凡六百六十四載。中間傳譯緇素總一百七十六人。所出大小二乘三藏聖教。及聖賢集傳并及失譯。總二千二百七十八部。都合七千四十六卷。其見行闕本並該前數。
新錄合二十卷。開為總別。總錄括聚群經。別錄分其乘藏。二錄各成十卷。就別更有七門。今先敘科條餘次編載。
總括群經錄上。
右從漢至唐所有翻述。具帝王年代并譯人本事。所出教等以人代先後為倫。不依三藏之次。兼敘目錄新舊同異。
別分乘藏錄下。
右別錄之中曲分為七。一有譯有本。二有譯無本。三支派別行。四刪略繁重。五拾遺補闕。六疑惑再詳。七偽邪亂正。就七門中二乘區別三藏殊科。具悉委由兼明部偶。
