The Ten Recitations Vinaya is one of the fundamental extensive vinayas in Buddhism, belonging to the Sarvāstivāda school. It was translated into Chinese in Chang'an during the Hongshi era of the Later Qin dynasty by Puṇyatara and Kumārajīva. Supported by Emperor Yao Xing, this vinaya was systematically translated and records the precepts, rituals, and circumstances for establishing rules laid down by the Buddha for the monastic community. Comprising ten recitations, it covers the precepts for bhikṣus, karmavācanā (formal monastic procedures), poṣadha (fortnightly confession and purification), and other contents. As one of the four major extensive vinayas in Chinese Buddhism, the Ten Recitations Vinaya provides crucial textual material for the study of early monastic discipline and saṅgha institutions, exerting a profound influence on the formation of the Vinaya school and the practice of precepts in China.
