The Sutra of Maniratna Spoken by the Buddha
Translated by Zhu Tanwulan, Tripitaka Master from India during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.
Thus have I heard:
Once the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in the country of Shravasti. At that time, he was teaching the Maniratna Sutra to the great assembly of monks. The Buddha asked Ananda, "Why do the people of the world fail to find peace and security? Why is it that so many among the countless people suffer from illness and pain? Why do mothers endure birth pains, why do hearts ache, heads throb, eyes grow dizzy, and people lose their appetite? All these are the work of demons." Hearing this, the monks were greatly alarmed and fearful. They approached the Buddha and asked, "Where does this pain come from, and where does it go? Why are people so deeply troubled and unhappy?" The Buddha then gathered the monks—Mahakashyapa, Aniruddha, Revata, Mahamaudgalyayana, Shariputra, Ananda, and Indra—together.
The Buddha then taught the Sutra of Maniratna. The Buddha then proclaimed the names of the Buddhas: first, Vipaśyin Buddha; second, Śikhin Buddha; third, Viśvabhū Buddha; fourth, Krakucchanda Buddha; fifth, Kanakamuni Buddha; sixth, Kāśyapa Buddha; seventh, Śākyamuni Buddha. This sutra now flows from the mouths of all these Buddhas.
First, Śikṣārā; second, Gandhārā; third, Gandūrā; fourth, Mikhārā; fifth, Kañjurā; sixth, Mayūrā; seventh, Asura; eighth, Suśramaṇa; ninth, Suśun; tenth, Kunti—all people, great and small, who suffer from illness—now the Buddha commands all bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās to recite this sutra.
There are ghosts of the kingdom, ghosts of the mountains, ghosts of the forests, ghosts of the twilight grass, ghosts among the tombs, ghosts within the tombs, ghosts upon the earth, ghosts in the water, ghosts by the water's edge, ghosts in the fire, ghosts by the fire, ghosts of the Northern Dipper, ghosts of the empty sky, ghosts of the marketplaces, ghosts of the dead, ghosts of the living, hungry ghosts, ghosts outside the path, ghosts upon the path, ghosts outside the hall, ghosts within the hall, ghosts within the body, ghosts outside the body, ghosts of food and drink, ghosts of the sleeping hour.
Now the Buddha says there are red ghosts, black ghosts, tall ghosts, short ghosts, large ghosts, small ghosts, medium-sized ghosts, white ghosts, yellow ghosts, blue ghosts, black ghosts, ghosts of dreams and waking, ghosts of the morning rise, ghosts that walk, ghosts that fly, ghosts that question human souls, ghosts of the living, and ghosts of the dead.
The Buddha said, "When anger arises, and knives and staffs are raised, always recite this Mani Ratna Scripture. Then all ghosts and spirits will be shattered."
The Buddha told the monks, "If someone receives and upholds this sutra, and they become sick or weak, they should recite this sutra. If they suffer from headaches, dizziness, chills, fevers, or heartache, they should constantly read this Mani Ratna Sutra. Then all ghosts and spirits will have their heads split into seven pieces."

If your country is afflicted by spirits—one called Deep Sand, and one called Floating Hill—these two ghosts move swiftly, seeking out human weaknesses. Should you suffer headaches, blurred vision, chills, fever, or heart pain, immediately call out the names of these two spirits and recite the Mani Ratana Sutra. All such ghosts and demons will be shattered without exception.
If there are blue ghosts, yellow ghosts, black ghosts, tall ghosts, short ghosts, wide and long ghosts—all great and small spirits that delight in disturbing people under heaven—whose names are: Golden Basket Ghost, Hungry Ghost, Starving Ghost, Miserly Ghost, Toiling Ghost, Sick and Emaciated Ghost, Ghost of Aches and Pains, Ghost of Thoughts, Ghost in the Body, Ghost Outside the Body, Deformed Ghost, Lame Ghost, Raving Ghost, Deaf and Dull Ghost, Mute Ghost, Groaning Ghost, Weeping Ghost, Bedridden Ghost, Wasting Ghost, Jealous Ghost, Phantom Ghost, Bewildering Ghost, Wandering Light Ghost, Suppressing Ghost, Cursing Ghost, Corpse-Dwelling Ghost, Leprosy-Dwelling Ghost, Official Residence Ghost, Military Camp Ghost, Waystation Ghost, Prison Death Ghost, Jail Death Ghost, Drowning Ghost, Water Death Ghost, Fire Death Ghost, Burning Death Ghost, Unburied Traveler Ghost, Marketplace Death Ghost, Road Death Ghost, Thirst Death Ghost, Starvation Death Ghost, Choking Death Ghost, Freezing Death Ghost, Soldier Death Ghost, Blood Death Ghost, Putrid Death Ghost, Debt-Cursed Death Ghost, Fight Death Ghost, Beaten Death Ghost, Strangled Death Ghost, Hanged Death Ghost, Self-Stabbed Death Ghost, Enemy Death Ghost, Violent Death Ghost, Decaying Skin Ghost, Hair-Plucking Ghost, Blood-Drinking Ghost, Flying Ghost, Riding Ghost, Chariot Ghost, Walking Ghost, Offending Ghost, Mountain Spirit Ghost, Stone Spirit Ghost, Earth Spirit Ghost, Seashore Ghost, Sea Ghost, Bridge Ghost, Ditch Ghost, Road Ghost, Pathside Ghost, Barbarian Ghost, Tribal Ghost, Tree-Spirit Ghost, Insect-Spirit Ghost, Bird-and-Beast-Spirit Ghost, Valley Ghost, Door Ghost, Outside Door Ghost, Inner Door Ghost, Outer Wall Ghost, Well and Stove Ghost, Filthy Pool Ghost, Toilet Spirit Ghost, Crossroads Ghost, Sorcery Ghost, Unruly Ghost, Deceitful Ghost—all great and small spirits, none shall harm that person. Any spirit that does not obey my words shall have its head split into seven pieces.
If a person falls ill and becomes emaciated, one should recite the names of the spirits mentioned above. By chanting this咒, the sick person will immediately recover. This scripture comes from the mouth of Shakyamuni Buddha himself. Upon hearing this sutra, all spirits from now on will renounce harm and offer healing.
The Buddha finished speaking this sutra. All the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen—as well as celestial beings, dragons, spirits, and other people—received the Buddha's blessings. They paid their respects to the Buddha and then departed.
