Chapter 1: Refuting the Four Views on Birth and Non-Birth
Because something exists, it does not come into being; Because something does not exist, it does not come into being either. Since these two are contradictory, it is neither existence nor non-existence— There is no arising, no abiding, and no ceasing.
If something already exists, it does not arise from a cause—because it is already present, it is called "existent." If something does not exist, it also does not arise from a cause—because it is absent. Something that is both existent and non‑existent cannot arise either, since these two contradict each other. Just as existence and non‑existence are contradictory, how could something that is neither existent nor non‑existent arise? These are mutually incompatible states. Since arising is not found, neither are abiding nor ceasing.
If a thing already exists, it cannot be produced again. If it does not yet exist, it cannot be produced either.
