The Commentary on the Nirvana Sutra with Personal Notes was compiled and composed by the Tang dynasty Tiantai master Xingman. It serves as an annotation and elucidation of the Commentary on the Nirvana Sutra authored by the Southern Dynasties master Zhiyi. This work emerged during the Tang dynasty, a period of flourishing Buddhist schools and the maturation of doctrinal systems in China. Its purpose is to provide a profound explanation of the Buddha-nature thought and the meaning of nirvana as eternal, blissful, self, and pure as presented in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. The content systematically expounds core doctrines such as all sentient beings possessing Buddha-nature, the Tathāgatagarbha, and the potential for icchantikas to attain Buddhahood. It integrates the Tiantai school's method of contemplating the mind and its classification of teachings. This work reflects the unique Chinese Buddhist understanding of the Nirvana Sutra and stands as an important text within the Tiantai tradition, exerting a profound influence on later studies of the Nirvana Sutra and the theory of Buddha-nature.
