### 不揲坐具戒第十五

> Chapter 15: The Precept on Not Folding the Sitting Mat

尼師壇此云隨坐衣也。此與後九十中相對者。此中制須揲。不爾即犯。此後九十中制應量。過量作即犯後戒。既同是坐具。何不合明。答。有四句不同。故分二戒。一作新如量。不揲犯前戒。二作故過量犯後戒。已是故物不犯不揲。三作故如量須持並不犯兩戒四作新過量。俱新物不揲犯前。過量犯後。不分別磨事人者。不能破磨人也。反上者反如上。眾多邊取即如法也。多云。若無長等者。謂舊故坐具無穿壞處。不覓一搩手咸亦須揲之。若彼自無得處者。先故物可得充揲也。更作新者。若無故者揲許更作新者。如量不犯。必有得處如律上文者。必有得故者。亦須揲著也。

> The "nisidana" (sitting cloth) is here referred to as the "garment for sitting anywhere." This is related to the rule in the latter section of ninety rules. Here, it is required that the cloth be patched; otherwise, one commits an offense. In the latter section of ninety rules, the size is regulated—if one makes it larger than the prescribed measurement, one commits an offense against that latter rule. Since both concern the sitting cloth, why are they not explained together? The answer is that there are four distinct scenarios, so they are divided into two rules: 1. Making a new cloth of the correct size but failing to patch it—this violates the former rule. 2. Making a cloth of excessive size—this violates the latter rule. Since it is an old cloth, not patching it does not constitute an offense. 3. Making an old cloth of the correct size—it must be patched <note>and does not violate either rule</note>. 4. Making a new cloth of excessive size—being new, not patching it violates the former rule, and making it oversized violates the latter rule. As for "not distinguishing the person who polishes," this means one who cannot break or polish the person. The opposite refers to what was stated above. Taking from the many sides is considered proper. The commentary states: "If there is no extra length," this refers to an old sitting cloth without any tears or damage. Even if one does not seek out an extra span, it must still be patched. If one cannot obtain such a piece, the old cloth itself can serve as the patch. When making a new one, if there is no old cloth, one is permitted to make a new one of the prescribed size without offense. If there is a way to obtain one, as stated in the Vinaya above, and one indeed has the means, it must also be patched.
