> Chapter 17: Washing and Dyeing Wool by a Nun Who Is Not a Relative

> The conditions for committing this offense are the same as those for the laundering robe rule. There are five conditions that constitute an offense: first, the person is a nun; second, the relationship is not a close relative; third, the action is done for oneself; fourth, one personally has the robe washed; fifth, the washing, dyeing, and wringing out are completed. Additionally, in the sequence of abandoning unwholesome actions, the underlying causes are these: out of kindness, one has the robe washed and dyed, which gives rise to attachment and coarseness. This manifests externally as an obstruction to the Dharma, and thus it is a cause for lustful desire. As for the rest, as explained in the commentary: In the previous section on laundering robes, the offense for washing old robes was lighter, while for new robes it was heavier. In this rule, whether the work is small or great, whether the robe is new or old, the offense is the same.
