The Sutra of the Bodhisattva's Jeweled Necklace was translated during the Later Qin dynasty by the scripture translator Zhu Fonian. This sutra emerged during a crucial phase in the development of Mahayana Buddhist scriptures, systematically expounding the stages and practical methods of the Bodhisattva path. Its core teachings include the meritorious adornments symbolized by the Bodhisattva's jeweled necklace, the ten stages of abiding in practice, and the doctrine that all sentient beings can attain Buddhahood. Within Chinese Buddhism, this sutra holds an exalted status, regarded as a foundational text for the Mahayana Bodhisattva precepts and system of practice. It has profoundly influenced the doctrinal formation of schools such as the Tiantai and Huayan traditions.

Chapter 1: Universal Praise

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was staying at the Universal Victorious Lecture Hall in the land of Magadha, together with a large assembly of monks—ten thousand monks and fifteen thousand bodhisattvas. All the great sages had gathered there, none missing. They were fully endowed with virtues and never abandoned the practice of total recollection. Their aspirations were vast and all-encompassing, their eloquence clear and free from doubt. They roamed in spiritual powers and expounded the profound truth, skillfully adapting their teachings to suit the needs of beings. With compassion reaching down to the lowly, they had reached the other shore. They proclaimed the Tathagata’s samadhi of true absorption. They were praised by all buddhas and revered by gods and humans. Their wishes were spontaneous and unimpeded; they universally dwelt in realms of supreme and wondrous wonders. Their spiritual abilities and transformations displayed every mark of perfection. They had subdued all demons and fully understood the Dharma's wisdom. They discerned all dharmas and deeply knew the ultimate origin. They observed the past roots of beings, expounded the path’s factors of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and were untouched by the eight worldly concerns. With great compassion, they rescued beings, guarding their body, speech, and mind from wrong views. Their resolve was noble and diligent, their minds as firm as diamond. Though laboring for countless eons, they were ever courageous and never weary. In the midst of the assembly, they displayed the majesty of a lion, subduing heterodox teachers so they would not retreat. They were sealed with the holy titles of approval. They walked in all the places where buddhas travel, all following as the awakened ones practice. They adorned the site of enlightenment with infinite grandeur. Whether walking or sitting, they entered into the fathomless wisdom. Their minds were ever joyful and without fear. The teachings they expounded were equal and undual; they treated the realized and the unrealized alike. Their fame and merit constantly remained at ease. They cultivated essential profound dharmas and taught with the path’s doctrine. In the assembly, they appeared majestic and radiant, with spiritual wisdom and mastery so profound they could not be measured. In the snap of a finger, they journeyed through countless buddha lands, making offerings to the ten directions’ fully enlightened ones. Their names were: Joyful Radiance Bodhisattva, Mountain Thunder Bodhisattva, Wisdom Secret Bodhisattva, Universal Light Bodhisattva, Savior of Beings Bodhisattva, Total Recollection Bodhisattva, Diamond Bodhisattva, Stone Grinding King Bodhisattva, Thunderclap Bodhisattva, Rain Drops Bodhisattva, Good Calculator Bodhisattva, Wisdom Accumulation Bodhisattva, Dharma Supreme Bodhisattva, Still Mind Bodhisattva, Illusion Dispeller Bodhisattva, Good Fame Bodhisattva, Space Store Bodhisattva, Mighty Power Bodhisattva, Flame Light Bodhisattva, Knower of Potential Bodhisattva, Exhausted Wisdom Bodhisattva, Boundless Bodhisattva, Firm Will Bodhisattva, Moonlight Bodhisattva, Dharma Blaze Bodhisattva, Invisible Bodhisattva, Incomparable Bodhisattva, Sun Abundant Radiance Bodhisattva.

Thus, from the countless Buddha worlds in the ten directions, bodhisattvas gathered in great numbers at the Saha World, wishing to hear the Teaching of the Adornments (Ch. *Yingluo*) from the Tathāgata—the gateway of great wisdom that leads to the Bodhisattva Treasury, with its inconceivable and limitless manifestations of skillful means. Also present were Maitreya and Mañjuśrī from the present Bhadra Kalpa, along with the sixteen great sages such as Bhadrapāla, eight great spirit-masters, Śakra (Indra) and the Four Heavenly Kings with the Trāyastriṃśa gods, the Yāma gods, the Tuṣita gods, the Nirmāṇarati gods, the Paranirmitavaśavartin gods, Māra’s son leader, Brahmā King, Brahmā Pure King, Good Brahmā King, Complete Brahmā King, great divine wondrous gods, Śuddhāvāsa gods, Vītarāga Light gods, reaching up to the Single Good Abode gods, the idle non-good spirits, along with tree spirits, mountain spirits, Garuḍa bird spirits, and all other great honored beings—each honored in turn. They also included gods, dragons, ghosts, spirits, Asuras, Garuḍas, Kiṃnaras, Mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, each with their retinues arriving at the Buddha’s presence. After making prostrations, they stood and attended him. The bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās each cultivated reverence, approached the Buddha, bowed, and sat down on one side.

At that time, the World-Honored One was surrounded and attended by a retinue of many hundreds of thousands of people. The Buddha ascended a majestic, lofty lion’s seat adorned with purity, and shared with the great assembly a Dharma teaching that was like a precious garland. In the midst of the assembly, the Buddha appeared like Mount Sumeru, radiant as a heap of gold, with a majesty and light unmatched in all the world. His virtuous qualities and dignified bearing were vast and immeasurable, and he emitted a great light illuminating everywhere without exception.

He further used his spiritual powers to move the ten directions. Responding in an instant, hundreds of thousands of precious jeweled canopies and garlands appeared in the sky, adorned with various treasures, covering everything above. Priceless jeweled pearls shone in the sky like suspended stars, and light streamed forth from these jewels, of incomparable beauty and brilliance. In the sky, a fine cloud appeared, raining down all kinds of fragrant flowers. At that time, the flowers in the sky accumulated ankle-deep, and a great sound arose, filling the entire world.

At that time, a bodhisattva named Universal Light, receiving the Buddha’s sacred guidance, rose from his seat, knelt with hands clasped, and said to the Buddha: “Today I have witnessed miraculous responses never before seen or heard. What auspicious signs are these, to bring about such wonders? I humbly ask the Great Sage to explain their meaning, so that all gathered here may forever be free from doubt.”

The Buddha told Puzhao, "Return to your seat. I will now explain to you, point by point, the meaning of the Dharma Garland, how to establish the sense doors and go beyond deluded thoughts, drawing near to the ground of all-knowing wisdom and universal awakening."

At that time, the World-Honored One, through his spiritual powers, observed the states of meditative concentration entered by the bodhisattvas. This teaching is called the Adornment of the Bodhi Tree Garland. It purifies the assembly of great beings, adorns the site of enlightenment, awakens the true path of Dharma with fearlessness, and allows them to roam freely in the holy insights, gaining mastery in the gate of enlightenment without losing eloquence.

Through spiritual power, he also adorned their seats, proclaiming and distinguishing the stage of irreversible progress. He explained that the single realm of Dharma is empty and without self-nature. He observed the sharp and dull natures of sentient beings, strengthened their resolve, and determined the nature of all phenomena. He removed mental afflictions, followed the essential principles of Dharma, spoken words that inspire trust without attachment, responded to questions without hesitation, and engaged in dialogue and discussion.

He taught unobstructed wisdom, forever free from bondage. He accumulated merit and virtue without harboring expectations. All the teachings he expounded were truly real and profoundly authentic. He did not calculate that conditioned things would achieve any ultimate result—form is non-form, for what purpose would you create form? He realized the deep and subtle truth of dependent origination in twelve links, tracing them to their source, which is ultimately boundless.

At that time, Bodhisattva Universal Light rose from his seat, approached the Buddha, and said: "I wish to ask a question. Please, may I be heard, and then I will speak."

The Buddha said, "Excellent! Ask whatever you wish. If you have any doubts, feel free to express them clearly, and I will explain them thoroughly for you."

At that time, Puzhaojian heard this with joy and delight, and immediately asked: "What is the Dharma-ornamented body of a Bodhisattva? How does a Bodhisattva eliminate false views? How does a Bodhisattva awaken to the transcendental Dharma? How does a Bodhisattva travel through worlds? How does a Bodhisattva draw near to the Tathagata? How does a Bodhisattva avoid being born from a womb? How does a Bodhisattva, at birth, have clear consciousness without confusion? How does a Bodhisattva develop firm faith? How does a Bodhisattva not act for himself? How does a Bodhisattva rescue beings from all kinds of suffering? What is the meaning of Dharma-giving and material-giving for a Bodhisattva? How does a Bodhisattva discern the meaning of emptiness? How does a Bodhisattva remove the veils of the mind? How does a Bodhisattva expand and intensify the Dharma-precepts? How does a Bodhisattva listen to the Dharma without ever growing weary? How does a Bodhisattva engage in the play of calm and insight? How does a Bodhisattva uphold moral discipline? How does a Bodhisattva vow to transcend worldly dharmas? How does a Bodhisattva remain unattached to household life? What is non-attachment for a Bodhisattva? What is meant by a Bodhisattva’s single sitting and single rising? How does a Bodhisattva keep his speech secret and his mind true?" The gist of his questions was just like this.

The Buddha said, "Puzhao! Excellent, excellent! You have asked the Tathagata about such a profound matter. Now listen carefully and ponder it well. Hold it deep in your heart, and never let it fall into ordinary worldly ways."

Puzhao replied, "Yes, World-Honored One. We joyfully wish to hear the Great Sage's teaching."

At that time, the World-Honored One declared to Universal Illumination: "Those who practice the Bodhisattva path should adorn themselves with the ten virtues. In body, speech, and mind, never speak of others' faults; do not harbor disrespect toward fellow practitioners. Let the mind be as balanced as empty space, without increase or decrease. Abandon all evil realms and refrain from harming others; regard all beings as no different from oneself. Dedicate yourself to attaining the boundless knowledge that arises from direct experience. Furthermore, teach beings the Four Noble Truths, calming the mind so that it awakens and realizes truth. Then, use the clever gateways of various wisdoms as adornments, guiding those of the Two Vehicles toward their destinations. Diligently pursue the Great Vehicle's studies, penetrating all phenomena thoroughly, and cultivate the meritorious conduct of a Tathagata. Guide beings step by step, without being violent or arrogant. Examine your own faults without criticizing others' shortcomings, transcending all difficulties. Always love the Dharma, dwelling in stillness without distraction, and eliminate all doubts and speculative views. Lead those who are hesitant to timely awakening. Never abandon the roots of virtue planted by the Bodhi mind. Moreover, teach others not to break their precepts. Consistently use great compassion to teach the sutras to others. In every world you travel through, do not depart from the Buddhas. Proclaim the disciplinary codes and attain omniscience. Furthermore, adorn the pure path of the Buddhas' jeweled enlightenment site with the adornment of radiant illumination. Let the adornment of light pervade everywhere, fully illuminating the great trichiliocosm, outshining the sun and moon so that they give no light. Even the majestic lights of the wondrous deities, Brahma, Shakra, and the Four Heavenly Kings all vanish. The unfathomable light of the Tathagata alone shines and manifests, with none to match it. This, Universal Illumination, is the path of the Bodhisattva—binding oneself with the ten virtues as adornment. Always remember the Buddhas and make offerings to the Tathagatas; praise the sacred teachings; and inspire beings to enter the gateway of the path. Furthermore, tell beings to make great, vast vows. Wherever they go, upon hearing a Buddha's name, they should nurture all beings wishing to be reborn in that Buddha land. Set your resolve broadly and immensely, without timidity. Delve deeply into sacred wisdom, unashamed to ask those of lower status. Always delight in the subtle and wonderful. Speak gently, without arrogance. Delight in living in seclusion and eliminate all greed and envy. Seeing those who practice, rejoice on their behalf. Use the power of merit to adorn the Bodhi tree, along with the power of karmic reward, the power of mind, the power of the nurturing fluid, the power of liberation that all sages abide in. Consistently use this Dharma to nurture beings, never abandoning them with loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity. Protect those attached to conditions by pulling out their roots. Penetrate the three times—past, future, and present—finding them ultimately nonexistent. Good and evil karmic rewards have no primal arising; each dharma extinguishes itself and each dharma arises itself; dharmas do not see extinction, dharmas do not see arising. The mind has no thoughts, no self, no person, no life; there is also no coming and going, no place to return. Furthermore, use the method of emptiness to adorn the sense faculties.

"In the past, when I attained Buddhahood, it was all through the pure thought of emptiness and non-attachment that I reached true enlightenment. I cultivated virtuous roots without creating entanglements, developed good practices without negligence, left behind worldly affairs and did not dwell in secular ways. Whatever I taught spread throughout the ten directions. I personally attended and paid homage to all Buddhas and World-Honored Ones. My offerings were pure, renouncing greed and desire; my mind was clear and stainless, without any defilement. My wisdom was boundless, my vision penetrating, and the three hindrances and six sense-objects were forever eliminated. This is what is called the Bodhisattva's adornment of the Dharma."

A bodhisattva should further raise a heart of great resolve, adorning themselves with the supreme garland of wisdom that knows no bounds. They should teach the Dharma in accordance with the capacity of each individual, and help them establish themselves on the path based on the wisdom they have heard. One who acts accordingly will never regress, holding firmly to their resolve and staying close to good spiritual friends.

Their words and teachings will never be false or empty. With constant reverence and respect, they do not stray from the scriptures. The mind, trained in profound wisdom, receives and never loses it. With one-pointed concentration, the mind never becomes confused. Only after fully understanding the depth of an illness will they administer the medicine. Their heart delights in patience, and their steps are deliberate and steady.

When giving material gifts, they hold no attachments or preferences. Their mind is clear, pure, and free from irritation. They study the fundamental teachings, and their mind does not drift. When others wish to hear the Dharma, they readily guide them, pointing out the essential path. When they see those in distress who cannot help themselves, they generously give, even to the point of offering their own treasures, adding to this the roots of goodness and all kinds of sublime practices. They encourage others to uphold precepts, and the wisdom they have heard leads them to realize the bodhisattva path.

"Even if a practitioner dwells among the Brahmins, they can still realize that everything arising is inseparable from patience. They abandon worldly pursuits to cultivate diligence, observe the impermanent nature of dependent arising, and maintain equanimity without dualistic thoughts of love or hate. Their actions are impartial, helping beings attain the state of non-arising patience. Always relying on boundless compassion, they gradually guide others through vows of vast commitment, sharing these teachings so that all may hear and understand. With a peaceful nature, they realize no self; they practice single-minded meditation and nurture wisdom without interruption. Their methods never depart from the four means of integration—generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and cooperation—rescuing those in distress and guiding them to the unconditioned. They guard against physical and verbal faults, avoiding three kinds of misconduct, and abide by the supreme true Dharma. With focused intention and cessation of wandering thoughts, they uphold the true nature of reality and cultivate without losing it. This, Universal Radiance, is the adornment of a bodhisattva's practice."

"Furthermore, Universal Light, a bodhisattva should deeply contemplate and evaluate the infinite. Practice generosity, uphold moral precepts, maintain a gentle expression and patience, be diligent and calm, and never lose mindfulness. Moreover, with sacred clarity and focused intention, deeply examine the Four Noble Truths—the path of nectar—leading directly to the unconditioned, free from all illusion. This is called the ornament of wisdom."

Always maintain a pure and single-minded heart. Give all that you have without reluctance or stinginess. Cultivate merit and realize the Dharma gate of liberation through understanding emptiness. When engaged in activities or teaching, guide others with instructions and admonitions. Widely receive all beings and lead them according to their needs, possessing a distinguished quality of benevolence and harmony. Understand the appropriate times and various types of beings. Express loving-kindness without clinging to pleasure or pain. Show compassion for all without avoiding hardship or danger. Awaken beings to the proper Dharma teachings. Fill the world with a generous mind, protect others and help them reach fulfillment. Your radiant adornment shines everywhere, universally pitying all so they may cross to the other shore. If someone dwells in darkness, dispel their ignorance completely without leaving any trace. With fearless strength, nurture all beings, eliminating their old age and sickness through mindful conduct. Wherever the guide goes, all follow his teaching. His heart, vast as the ocean, hears and gives to others, transforming afflictions so no false thoughts remain. Where he dwells, he remains unattached like a flower, understanding all dharmas as tranquil and pure. The teaching he expounds distinguishes causes and conditions, helping others achieve virtue through its practice.

For the sake of compassion for the world's suffering, the Buddha instructs all living beings that the world is not real, nor truly existent. He helps them understand that worldly phenomena are like bubbles and illusions, yet beings remain unaware and habitually cling to them. Even while living at home, one can transcend the difficulties of life, with the eye of the Way pure like a lotus flower. His divine virtue is lofty and immeasurable; even if all beings in the world together praised him, they could not fathom its source.

At that time, the World-Honored One again told Pu Zhao: "To sit in meditation and practice the Way is to realize that there is no coming or going. If one perceives coming and going, then clinging thoughts arise. Discriminating between sin and blessing also has no arising or ceasing—all is naturally empty and without substance. Marks abide without a master, having neither root nor branch, and there is no wish or seeking that can obtain anything. One who can reflect and examine such principles is said to be a bodhisattva advancing on the noble path."

Further, one should discern the laws of the three times, understanding that there is no duality, no self, no person, and that all realms are fundamentally empty. If one perceives something coming, it is merely a result of cause and effect; that which neither arises nor ceases is the true path. Sound carries tone, but tone has no form; words and letters are likewise without substance. To see through all this clearly is to be enlightened to all things.

A Bodhisattva's ornament is genuine and true, free from all falsity and hindrance, removing all layers of obscurity so that nothing remains. If one establishes giving according to where it is needed, and if nothing is established in a fixed way, this accords with the perfection of generosity. With a careful mind, one lets go of all that is unwholesome. One who upholds this mind is in harmony with the precepts. Understanding that all phenomena are naturally unconditioned, without fixed abode or ultimate boundary, one diligently engages in thought and establishes the right foundation. With diligent effort and meditative concentration, one controls the body, speech, and mind. Wisdom shines of its own accord, removing all defilements—this is in harmony with wisdom.

Infinite Light! Furthermore, understand that through psychic powers, one realizes their corresponding karmic results. With the celestial eye, one gains perfect vision—all achieved by upholding precepts, cultivating conduct, abiding in upright views, and committing no transgressions. Adorning oneself with the Dharma's garland brings the celestial ear; through mindful practice and supportive encouragement, the aspiration for enlightenment arises. Some attain the power of recollection, naturally remembering past lives, and for the sake of sentient beings, accumulate merit and virtue.

Always examining oneself, realizing one has not yet reached that realization, one cultivates psychic powers and grasp transformations without limit. Letting go of all perceptions and attachments, one abides in meditative contemplation, equanimous and non-dual—thus understanding the cause and effect of karma. With the power of wisdom, eliminate all defilements. Through absorption, thoroughly comprehend the noble Dharma without entering duality. Exhaust all taints and never lose the aspiration for enlightenment; inspire others to cultivate virtue. Further encourage mundane generosity—though giving, do not expect reward—causing countless people to delight in pursuing the Dharma.

One can understand all things and penetrate them entirely, enabling others to practice the Bodhisattva path—all achieved through diligence, without giving rise to laziness. With loving-kindness and compassion, protect all beings, leading them to fulfillment. For the sake of sentient beings, one does not begrudge life itself, nor clings to personal treasures. Wherever born, follow the principles of the Path. When others make requests, answer without hesitation. Hearing wisdom, give with faith without wavering. In both words and actions, one is consistently trusted and followed.

Thus the Thus-Come One is unhindered, abiding in tranquil stillness without negligence, firm in patient endurance, and delighting in peaceful solitude. He transforms beings, urging them to reflect on their own shortcomings. Through meditative absorption and the gate of liberation, he remains unshaken in right concentration. Ever abiding in spiritual powers for his own delight, he further employs the radiance of infinite illumination, adapting timely to discern the meanings of all doctrines and principles, eradicating all afflictions without concealment. Constantly and single-mindedly, he opens the path of sacred wisdom, revealing to countless beings the fruits of karmic retribution. Fully endowed with all virtues, he is invincible through his courageous power, comprehending that the three times are fundamentally non-existent—the past, future, and present are neither increased nor diminished. Thus, he then realizes the Perfection of Wisdom.

Through giving, he awakens the resolve for enlightenment, wishing to bring peace and well-being to all beings. He unties his own fetters without concern for his own body. Should others strike him with sticks or whips, he endures it all. He also transforms others to practice forbearance. With all roots of virtue complete, he applies focused attention, cultivating the Buddha’s teachings and exhorting beings to renounce the household life and pursue the path. Contemplating impurity and the decay of the body, he grows weary of evil realms and brings his meritorious deeds to fulfillment. His heart rejoices in the virtuous deeds he performs; his wisdom penetrates deeply without harboring resentment. He firmly upholds precepts, naturally attaining excellent virtue. With a harmonious mind, he is modest and unconfused, always controlling his mental state without grasping at coarseness. He reflects on the boiling torment of hellish realms and extols the infinite bliss of heavenly blessings, abiding in serene joy free from greed. When giving, he relinquishes the threefold attachment; his mind neither clings to internal states nor is moved by external objects. He cultivates the path, letting all desires cease. He discerns wisdom and awakens his own mind through the gates of liberation: emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. He eradicates all inverted views without causing harm. This, Universal Light, is the bodhisattva's adornment of the mind dwelling in non-attachment.

Their minds are impartial and empty, equal to all, without any partiality. They are free from delusive thoughts, fully equipped with giving, and their minds are calm and at ease. When teaching the Dharma to others, they never depart from the meaning of emptiness. With compassion for all beings, their conduct has no flaw or omission. They observe the knowledge beings receive from the Dharma, understand their intentions and natures, and thus guide and enlighten them. Wherever they go, they lead everyone, cultivating noble wisdom and revealing the truth of the path. With boundless great compassion, they liberate others. They also employ the power of skillful means, entering among the various heretical paths and foreign teachings, following their customs and participating in their rituals. They observe their aspirations and lead them to liberation, causing all Brahmins to amass limitless merit. Even when among evil groups or bands of thieves, they guide and reveal their conduct, and through this, transform and liberate countless beings. Their virtues from past lives are already complete at this point, and all who see them are joyful and respectful. They rain the sweet dew of the Dharma's flavor, removing the knots of hatred and anger from beings. If someone comes to confront them with various troubles, they do not become weary or annoyed. Instead, they impart the Dharma of tranquility, understanding that all such disturbances arise from what is not true or real.

Thus, Universal Illumination! The bodhisattva's practice is like a garland of the mind. Dwelling within it, they constantly find joy, yet they do not see what is enjoyed, for joy itself has no object. They find delight in the true nature of reality. They clearly understand the fundamental inclinations of sentient beings, rescuing and liberating them so that no afflictions remain, completely eliminating all harmful disturbances. They control their mind, making it equal to empty space. They discern the arising and cessation of the four elements, seeking to transform beings and instruct them. Their speech is true and impartial, without love or hate. They abandon all distorted views, and their steadfast mind is a garland of firmness, a banner of strength. They fight against various mental factors like a brave general leading a great army, subduing external enemies and bringing them into the path of truth. When entering worldly customs, they establish the teaching of Dharma: giving brings reward, observing precepts leads to heavenly rebirth, and all virtuous deeds have results. Through this, they guide beings to the unconditioned. A bodhisattva naturally adorns themselves with this garland. Their mind never heeds the words of evil friends, thus they perfect the conduct of a great being. Their mind is pure, free from self-conceit. Firm as a mountain, their conduct has no flaw. Their wisdom illuminates everything like the full moon shining. In any assembly, they are unsurpassed. This, Universal Illumination, is the bodhisattva's garland, complete and all-encompassing.

[They] awakened to emptiness, stillness, and non-existence. Wherever they were born, a constant light appeared. Upon hearing anything, they understood it immediately, all the way to complete Buddhahood. They always contemplated and proclaimed the essential gates of the sense faculties. They established their own karma without causing harm. They saw the fundamental nature, its natural arising and ceasing. The eight worldly concerns did not obstruct them. Their body, speech, and mind were never deceitful.

Furthermore, they used skillful means and wisdom to rescue and benefit beings, satisfying those who were poor and destitute. They held their minds like the earth, not committing the three faults. They advanced daily on the Path, not engaging in indulgence. They attained an unwavering, steadfast mind. The tolerance of the non-arising of phenomena manifested before them. With the ten strengths, they were fearless in the correct view of the Path. They abandoned self, person, and life span. They discriminated and contemplated the existence and non-existence of all things. They could manifest transformations in countless Buddha lands. All this was achieved through spiritual powers and autonomy.

The bodhisattva’s speech, like a jeweled garland, transcended all views without any further longing. Their minds were directed toward the correct Path without any inversion. Their eloquence was unhindered and without stagnation. They moved back and forth without generating attachment. They eliminated all fetters and latent tendencies. Pride and arrogance were completely and eternally extinguished. Their voices resonated like a lion’s roar, and like the crash of thunder, all heard the sound. They firmly abided in the ultimate, all the way to nirvāṇa. They sent forth the cloud of the supreme jeweled garland, performing the thunder of the Dharma, the drum of the Dharma, and the lightning of the Doctrine. They rained down the taste of liberation, proclaimed the seven factors of enlightenment, and contemplated the purity of the Dharma without ever abandoning the Three Jewels. Their minds were like the bright moon, undefiled. They penetrated coming and going without abandoning the proper path. They were fully endowed with all sublime characteristics.

This, Universal Radiance, is the bodhisattva's jeweled garland, which is inexhaustible. It is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end; it is penetrating and beneficial. It attracts and illuminates without ever losing the precepts. Past and future Buddhas, as countless as the sands of the Ganges, all praise the virtues of this bodhisattva. Thus, Universal Radiance, the treasury of the noble path, the gate of jewels, is inexhaustible.
