Chapter 6: Attaining the Fruit
The outcome of the body and the resulting rewards Are the direct fruition of stronger causes. Delight, growth, and purity of mind Arise in stages as their natural effects.
Results of the Vessel correspond with wholesome roots. The Result of Retribution arises because the fruit of the vessel is enhanced, making wholesome roots most excellent. The Result of Delight comes from repeatedly practicing in past lives, creating delight in wholesome dharmas. The Result of Growth comes from repeatedly cultivating merit and wholesome roots in the present life, bringing them to perfection. The Result of Purification comes from eliminating all obstacles. At this stage, the results follow five sequences to be understood: first, the Result of Retribution; second, the Result of Enhancement; third, the Result of Flowing with the Path; fourth, the Result of Effort; fifth, the Result of Separation from Obstacles.
The highest fruit, the first fruition, The fruits achieved through steady practice, The fruits of following the path and purifying the mind, The fruits of letting go and reaching higher states—
Because some fruits are within reach, others beyond, Thus I have briefly spoken of the results.
If we briefly describe the results, there are ten kinds. First, the supreme result, which should be understood as arising from innate resolve through cultivation, progressing in orderly stages. The initial result is the first attainment of transcendental principles. The habitual result pertains to the stage of learning after the initial result. The ultimate result refers to the principles beyond learning. The adaptive result arises from conditional causes, as should be understood. The supreme result and the remedial result are causes for cessation and the path, leading to the initial result. Here, the first path is called the remedial result, the separation result, the habitual result, and the perfect result, for it eliminates the hindrances of afflictions. This proceeds in order, representing the results of saints in the learning and beyond-learning stages. The superior result refers to merits such as spiritual powers. The relative result pertains to the Bodhisattva stage, surpassing other vehicles. The unsurpassed result pertains to the stage of the Tathagatas. These four kinds of results serve to analyze the perfect result. This is a brief summary; a detailed explanation would be boundless.
Within this, cultivation includes integrated practice elements: the cultivation of awakening, the cultivation of thinning, the cultivation of thorough refinement, the cultivation of higher tasks, and the cultivation of intimate union, where wisdom and its object become one. There is superior cultivation, superior attainment cultivation, initial cultivation, intermediate cultivation, final cultivation, and cultivation with relative superiority. Unsurpassed cultivation means that the object is unsurpassed, contemplation is unburdened, and attainment is unsurpassed, thus cultivation abides. Integrated practice elements should be actualized through abiding cultivation; "abiding" refers to one dwelling in their inherent nature.
Action-based abiding cultivation, from the stage of resolve to the stage of cultivation, is called the purest abiding, the purest level abiding, and the adorned level abiding. It pervades all ten stages, so there is unsurpassed level abiding. The integrated results include: one, the encompassing result; two, the supreme result; three, the karmically conditioned result; four, the supremely progressive result; five, the brief result; and six, the extensive result. Here, the encompassing result includes the five kinds of results; the remaining results are variations of these five. The karmically conditioned result arises from past accumulations, hence it is called the retributive result, as it progresses from the supreme. There are four remaining results: briefly, the supreme result has four aspects; extensively, the adaptive result has six. These four kinds of results are elaborated on in detail. In the *Madhyantavibhaga*, this section has three categories: one, the remedial category; two, the abiding cultivation category; and three, the result attainment category. The ultimate meaning has been fully explained. (One, the vessel result; two, the retributive result; three, the delight result; four, the growth result; five, the purification result—these encompass all results.)
