Treatise on the Supreme King of Buddha Recitation Samadhi, Volume One
Composed by Feixi, a monk of Caotang Temple on Mount Zi in the Tang Dynasty
A certain visitor of profound faith came to my meditation retreat, bowed, and asked a question, his words most clear and refined. He asked me: "For those who cultivate the mind, what is the direct path to attaining the Way? The Lotus Samadhi's practice of never slighting others, the Buddha Recitation Samadhi of the Pratyutpanna tradition—all are said to be unsurpassed, profound, and wondrous gates of Zen. I wish to hear their essential meaning."
I replied: "I have sat in silence among the nine peaks, dwelling apart from worldly endeavors. By imperial decree, I was summoned from the thatched hut at Purple Pavilion Mountain's Caotang Temple to oversee the sacred grounds of the Thousand Blessings Lotus Dharma Assembly. It has been nearly thirty years now. Many who aspire to the lofty and seek the profound have come to inquire, but none have asked what you have asked. You are about to ford the dragon's crossing into the unborn, and wish to soar southward like the great peng bird. I am not clever, but let me attempt to discuss it. I will now briefly open twenty gates to illuminate this meaning."
