第八祖佛陀難提。迦摩羅國人。姓瞿曇氏。生而頂有肉髻。性大聰明。能一覽悉記。其齒已四十歲。會婆須蜜來其本國。乃慕其說法。從之出家。得道納戒。亦務遊化。至提伽國。得奇人伏馱蜜多。為之弟子。臨般涅槃。乃以法付之。說偈曰。
The Eighth Patriarch, Buddhanandi, was from the land of Kamala. His family name was Gautama. Born with a fleshy protuberance on his head, he was exceptionally intelligent, able to remember everything at a single glance. At the age of forty, he met Vasubandhu in his homeland and, drawn to his teachings, became his disciple. After attaining enlightenment and receiving the precepts, he too engaged in wandering and teaching. When he reached Tiga, he found an extraordinary man named Purnamitra and took him as a disciple. As he approached nirvana, he entrusted the Dharma to him, reciting this verse:
虛空無內外 心法亦如此
若了虛空故 是達真如理
Emptiness has no inside or outside, And so too the nature of mind. If you truly understand emptiness, You have realized the ultimate truth.
