Take Refuge in the Three Jewels

The Buddha is the great teacher of the three realms. The Dharma is the eyes of all living beings. The Sangha consists of noble practitioners united in harmony. Together, they form the true and pure field of merit. Turning away from them leads to error; following them leads to truth. Their divine power is unequaled, their sacred might beyond comprehension. They remove suffering like a medicine arrow that swiftly brings down a target, and release us from hardship like a frosty sword that cuts through a siege. They transform suffering into joy in an instant, and turn ordinary beings into sages in a moment. Thus, when the fiery chariot appears before one, taking refuge brings immediate coolness. When hell is about to be entered, calling upon them with devotion frees one from all suffering. Puming and the kings escaped disaster through the power of concentration; Emperor Shakra overcame the threat of King Pindola through the might of wisdom. Therefore, faithful disciples of the Buddha take refuge in the Three Jewels. With true compassion, they offer flowers and incense to the Buddha and Sangha, recite and circulate the Dharma treasure, and dedicate these merits toward Enlightenment, wishing all beings to be reborn together in the Pure Land. Have we not heard that the Kalaviṅka bird and the parrot, through mindful recitation, attained rebirth in the West? The gods and emperors, with reverence and devotion, vowed to seek the holy path. All can achieve Buddhahood above and escape the wheel of suffering below. It may be said that Chan is like the great teacher Guishan, and poetry like that of the simple recluse—only three great masters under the great Tang emperor.
