Generating Bodhicitta
The supreme Buddha fruit is called Bodhi—the awakened mind. If one gives rise to this mind, they are certain to attain Buddhahood. The Pure Conduct teachings state: "Those who cultivate the Pure Land must give rise to mind skillfully. If one, out of self-concern, tires of the five turbidities and yearns for the nine grades of rebirth, this goes against the Bodhi mind. It is the path of a voice-hearer and should not be aroused. If one, for the sake of all beings, gives rise to great compassion, seeking to be reborn in that land in hopes of swift attainment—to master spiritual powers, travel throughout the ten directions, rescue all beings, and lead them to Buddhahood together—this accords with the Bodhi mind. It is the conduct of a Bodhisattva and should be aroused."
Now I urge those who aspire to the Pure Land’s highest path: whether seeking benefit for self or others, you must resolve your mind and set your purpose. Before the Three Jewels, sincerely offer incense and flowers, and with heartfelt resolve, make this vow:
"Namo Buddha, Namo Dharma, Namo Sangha. Disciple (Your Name), from today onward, give rise to this great mind—not for the sake of personal blessings, heavenly rewards, or enlightenment as a solitary or hearer, nor even provisional Bodhisattva stages, but solely relying on the Supreme Vehicle, vowing to awaken to Bodhi. I pray that together with my present parents and countless ancestral parents, all beings in the Dharma Realm, and every enemy and friend, we may all be reborn in the Pure Land and never regress from *Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi*—perfect, supreme enlightenment."
Recite this vow three times. This mind must be aroused again and again, daily, without fail. For this reason, Sudhana realized Buddhahood in a single lifetime. The dragon girl attained it at age eight. One in hell who gives rise to this mind instantly surpasses the ten stages. A novice monk who stirs this intention has already transcended the two vehicles. Truly, it can be said: "A single breath returns the primal vitality—its grace reaches all beings, deep and vast."
