Author's Preface to the Re-engraved Xuanqian Zhengyi
The heart of the Way is transmitted from mind to mind, yet it relies entirely on words and texts to flow and spread. Therefore, Shakyamuni Buddha appeared in this world for one great cause, dwelling on earth for eighty years and delivering teachings through hundreds of thousands of assemblies, with the Lotus Sutra being foremost among them.
During the Chen and Sui dynasties, Great Master Tiantai Zhiyi personally realized the Lotus Samadhi, attained the unobstructed eloquence known as the Dhāraṇī of Turning, and established the teaching system of the Eight Teachings and the Five Periods. Over ninety days, he eloquently elucidated the profound meaning of the Lotus Sutra, composed a commentary on it, and revealed its essential principles. By perfecting the Ten Contemplations, even emperors and elders were delighted and praised his teachings. The entire teaching of his era was thus exhaustively revealed.
Venerable Zhang'an recorded the Profound Meaning in ten volumes, elucidating one thousand teachings on the mind, while also encompassing two thousand teachings on the Buddha and sentient beings. He recorded the Words and Phrases in fifteen volumes, clarifying one thousand teachings on the Buddha, while incorporating two thousand teachings on the mind and sentient beings. He recorded the Great Calm and Contemplation in twenty volumes, clarifying one thousand teachings on sentient beings, while including two thousand teachings on the Buddha and the mind. From this, it is understood that the three thousand realms of existence and the hundred worlds with their thousand suchnesses truly arise from the single thought-moment of each individual. As it is said: "When the mind arises, various phenomena arise; when the mind ceases, various phenomena cease."
When the mind is clear and unobscured, sentient beings are no different from the Buddha. When the mind is not yet fully awakened, the Buddha is no different from sentient beings. The Avatamsaka Sutra says: "The mind, the Buddha, and sentient beings—these three are without distinction."
Master Zhiquan compiled the Commentary on the Profound Meaning in ten volumes, opening the right path for humans and celestial beings, placing a bright lamp in the long night, and guiding later students to awakening, thus directly revealing the mind-ground Dharma gate. Regrettably, the original woodblocks for this book have been lost, and copies are extremely rare.
During the Xianfeng era (1851–1861), Great Master Yanjing, lecturer at the Mingyin Temple in Meixi, Taiyi, resolved to raise funds for re-carving the blocks. However, having become the abbot and being occupied with building the lecture hall, he could not complete the work. Entrusting the monks, he specifically said to (Minxi): "The one who will complete this book must be you." (Minxi) also served as abbot at Huading Temple on Mount Tiantai, Guangrun Temple in Ningyi, and rebuilt the FojingZhenjue Stupa Temple. Time passed swiftly; suddenly thirty years had gone by. The sound of his words still echoed in my ears—how could I dare forget his intention? So I continued to raise funds, with the support of friends from various monasteries and virtuous, wise benefactors who cultivate merit and wisdom. Thus, the merit is now complete—may all enter the assembly of the Dragon Flower Dharma assembly together. May the Dharma wheel turn and may we all ascend together to the Tusita Heaven. I have briefly described the background for this carving, only hoping that all worthy people will treasure it greatly.
