The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Puan Yinsu is a collection of teachings by the Southern Song Dynasty Linji School master Puan Yinsu, though the original text has been lost. Master Puan was a twelfth-generation descendant of the Linji lineage, active in the twelfth century, renowned for his spiritual powers and insightful Chan teachings. The recorded sayings include his sharp dialogues, essential points of Chan practice, guidance for cultivation, and exchanges with disciples, reflecting the Linji School’s direct pointing to the mind and realization of one’s true nature to attain Buddhahood. Although this record has not survived, Master Puan’s influence in Buddhist history remains profound. He is especially revered in folk belief as a saint who dispels calamities, and his mantras and Chan methods continue to be widely transmitted today, serving as an important reference for the study of Southern Song Chan Buddhism and popular Buddhist practices.
