The Sutra of the Magnificent and Vast Adornment, also known as the Sutra of the Great Adornment, was translated into Chinese by the Tang Dynasty translator Divākara in the seventh century CE. It is an important scripture of Mahāyāna Buddhism. This sutra, composed in both verse and prose, meticulously records the complete journey of Śākyamuni Buddha—from his descent from the Tuṣita Heaven, his renunciation, his attainment of enlightenment, to his first turning of the Dharma wheel—highlighting the sublime adornment of compassion and wisdom inherent in the Bodhisattva conduct. As a representative work of Buddha-biography literature, it integrates Jātaka tales with Prajñāpāramitā thought, demonstrating the Mahāyāna practitioner's perfect realization of benefiting both self and others. This sutra serves as a crucial text for the study of the Buddha's life and the development of Mahāyāna Buddhist doctrine, holding a revered position within Chinese Buddhism.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Thus I have heard:

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the kingdom of Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika’s Park. He was accompanied by a multitude of twelve thousand great Bhikshus, all great Arhats. Their names were: Ajnatakaundinya, Mahakashyapa, Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakatyayana, Purnamaitrayaniputra, Mahana, Aniruddha, Kapphina, Bhadrika, Upali, Nanda, Svagata, Ananda, Rahula. These and others were great Arhats, well known to the community.

In addition, there were thirty-two thousand great Bodhisattvas—all destined to reach Buddhahood in their next life, freely playing with spiritual powers and samadhi, who had fulfilled their great vows, entered unobstructed wisdom, attained forbearance of all dharmas, and had perfect eloquence and memory without hindrance. All had originated from the paramitas and had fully realized the levels of Bodhisattvahood, obtaining all the independent powers of a Bodhisattva. Their names were: Maitreya Bodhisattva, Dharanisvara Bodhisattva, Simhanada Bodhisattva, Arthasiddhi Bodhisattva, Sila-samadhi-prajna Bodhisattva, Nityodyukta Bodhisattva, Anavarana-prajna Bodhisattva, Mahakarunacintin Bodhisattva, as well as other Bodhisattvas of such kind.

At that time, the World-Honored One was constantly revered and supported by the fourfold assembly—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen—as well as kings, princes, ministers, officials, noble warriors, Brahmins, elders, householders, and countless others among non-Buddhist followers. Using the four basic necessities, they showed their respect and care for him. His offerings were the most supreme of all. The Buddha's mind was free from any attachment, just as a lotus flower is not stained by water. His name and renown spread far and wide throughout all ten directions. He is called the Thus-Come One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Awakened One, the One Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed One, the Tamer of Beings, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One. He realized the five kinds of vision and perfected the six supernormal powers. In this world and in other lands, he taught the true Dharma to gods and humans. His teachings were excellent in the beginning, middle, and end; their meaning was profound and far-reaching; his words were artful and complete, perfectly pure, and entirely adorned with the conduct of the holy life.

At that time, in the middle of the night, the Tathagata entered the Buddha's Adornment Samadhi. From his topknot, he emitted a great ray of light called "Unattached Wisdom that Remembers Past Buddhas." It shone upward to the Palace of the Pure Abodes, intending to awaken the heavenly beings there. Within the net of light, it spoke these verses:

The Sage’s body, speech, and mind are pure; His wisdom-light illuminates the world. This light, the supreme, dispels all darkness— To the Lion of the Śākyas, we should take refuge.

His wisdom is an ocean, splendid with majesty; The Knower of Truth, unbound, is King of Dharma. Worthy of offerings by all, celestial god of gods, Awakened and free—to Him we should take refuge.

All unruly minds He has tamed; His pure intent transcends Māra’s net. Nothing seen or heard from Him is wasted— To the one who has crossed to freedom’s shore, we take refuge.

The Buddha has no fixed nature, no equal; His deeds are boundless, yet always serene. He reveals the subtle truth, dispelling doubt— In perfect trust, to Him we should take refuge.

He bestows the nectar of healing, the great Physician; With eloquence and might, He shatters false paths. His retinue is Dharma; He discerns the Ultimate— The Teacher proclaims the unsurpassed Way.

Then, the Celestial being of the Pure Abode, hearing these verses, arose from his state of meditative absorption. At that moment, he immediately recalled past boundless, incalculable eons of all the Buddhas, Tathāgatas, the majestic adornments of their Buddha lands, and the assemblies where they taught the Dharma—all of this became completely clear to him.

At that time, Maheśvara, Nanda, Sunanda, and countless other celestial beings of the Pure Abode, with radiant brilliance and awe-inspiring majesty, illuminated the Jeta Grove. They came to the place where the Buddha was, prostrated themselves at his feet, and stood with palms pressed together in reverence. They addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! There is a scripture called the ‘Sūtra of the Magnificent, Expansive, and Playful Display of the Great Adornment’s Dharma Gate.’ This scripture reveals the foundation of all the Bodhisattva’s qualities. It describes how the Bodhisattva dwells in the sublime Tushita Heaven, contemplates his descent, and manifests his birth into an excellent lineage. It details how he possesses all virtues, engages in the activities of a youth, and excels in arts, crafts, engineering, calligraphy, arithmetic, wrestling, and martial skills—surpassing everyone in the world. It shows how he experiences the five desires while still treading the Bodhisattva path, subdues the armies of Māra, and brings forth all the Buddha’s qualities, such as the powers and fearlessnesses.

“This scripture has already been taught by countless World-Honored Ones, Buddhas of the past, such as: Padma-utpala-vīra Buddha, Dharma-dhvaja Buddha, Prabhākara-dhvaja Buddha, Guṇa-dhvaja Buddha, Guṇa-svabhāva Buddha, Mahā-svabhāva Buddha, Ṛṣi-deva Buddha, Śrī-prabha Buddha, Satya-dhvaja Buddha, Vajra-dṛḍha Buddha, Sarva-avabhaṁsana Buddha, Suvarṇa-varṇa Buddha, Ucca-gamana Buddha, Pravaḍa-sāgara Buddha, Puṣpa-dhvaja Buddha, Śreṣṭha-varṇa Buddha, Su-prabhāsa Buddha, Ṛṣi-rakṣita Buddha, Śreṣṭha-cakra Buddha, Ucca-śreṣṭha Buddha, Praphulla-padma Buddha, Ūrṇā-prabha Buddha, Padma-kūṭa Buddha, Su-prabha Buddha, Maṅgala Buddha, Su-darśana Buddha, Siṃha-prabha Buddha, Dṛḍha-dāna Buddha, Gandha-śālin Buddha, Mahā-nāma-dhvaja Buddha, Tiṣya Buddha, Puṣya Buddha, Loka-kalpa-dhāraṇa Buddha, Samanta-prabha Buddha, Ratna-kīrti Buddha, Śreṣṭha-prabha Buddha, Brahma-prabha Buddha, Su-ghoṣa Buddha, Su-puṣpa Buddha, Madhura-ghoṣa Buddha, Varṇa-cārin Buddha, Smita-netra Buddha, Guṇa-samudaya Buddha, Mahā-megha-svara Buddha, Su-varṇa Buddha, Āyuṣ-prabha Buddha, Gaja-vikrāmin Buddha, Loka-rati Buddha, Māra-pramardana Buddha, Samyak-arhat Buddha, Vipaśyin Buddha, Śikhin Buddha, Viśvabhū Buddha, Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, and Kāśyapa Buddha. These and other countless Buddhas of the past have all taught this scripture.

“We only wish that the World-Honored One, just as the Buddhas of the past have done, for the benefit and happiness of countless beings, out of compassion for the world, for the sake of bringing them true meaning and benefit, for enabling gods and humans to grow in the Great Vehicle, for subduing heretical paths and destroying the hosts of Māra, for revealing the Bodhisattva’s conduct and merit, for encouraging diligent effort in the supreme vehicle, for embracing the true Dharma and perpetuating the three jewels without interruption, and for perfectly displaying the completion of the Buddha’s work—also teach this scripture.”

At that time, the Tathagata, out of compassion for all the heavenly beings, silently accepted their invitation. The heavenly beings, rejoicing greatly, felt their minds become clear and pure. They bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet, walked around him three times to the right, scattered heavenly mandarava flowers as an offering, and then suddenly disappeared.

At that time, the World-Honored One, at early dawn, went to the Kala Dharma Hall, arranged his seat, and sat down. The great bodhisattvas and the assembly of shravakas respectfully surrounded him. He said to the monks: "Last night, at midnight, Maheshvara, Nanda, Sunanda, and countless beings from the Pure Abodes bowed at my feet, with palms together and reverent hearts, and said to me: 'We beseech the Tathagata to expound the Great Adornment Sutra of Spiritual Powers and Play, out of compassion for all beings in the heavens and the human realm, so that bodhisattvas, both present and future, may gain benefit.' I silently consented to their request. Listen attentively! I shall now teach this."
