Chapter 9: Precious Adornments

The Buddha told the monks: "At that time, there was a minister named Udayana, who was skilled in astronomy and calendrical calculations. Together with his five hundred retainers, when the moon left the constellations of Chariot and Horn and aligned with the constellation of the Star, he came to the king and said: 'Please allow us to craft precious ornaments for the prince.' The king replied: 'Have them made promptly.' Five hundred ministers of the Shakya clan also each offered to craft ornaments for the Bodhisattva—such as rings, headpieces, necklaces, earrings, belts, garlands, slippers, bells, chimes, and golden nets. After these ornaments were completed, the constellation Pushya was exactly in conjunction with the moon. At that time, the Shakya relatives brought these precious items to the king and said, 'Great King! We wish to present these ornaments we have crafted to the prince.' The king said: 'Wait—first you offer various kinds of tribute. I too am crafting ornaments for the prince.' The Shakya relatives then said to the king: 'What we present is no different from what is customary for such adornments. We only ask that the prince be allowed to wear them for seven days each—that is our wish.' The next morning, Mahaprajapati went to the Immaculate Garden, adorned the Bodhisattva with all the precious ornaments, and carrying him in her arms, brought him into the garden. At that time, eighty-four thousand maidens came forth to welcome the Bodhisattva, ten thousand young girls gazed upon him, ten thousand Shakya maidens revered him, and five thousand Brahmins praised him. All of them looked upon him with admiration and never tired of doing so. At that time, there was a Shakya named Bhadra who clothed the Bodhisattva in the precious ornaments they had crafted. It was then that the Bodhisattva's own radiance outshone the luster of all those jewels, dimming their brilliance—just as a heap of charcoal pales beside Jambu River gold. Then the guardian deity of the garden, named Immaculate, appeared in visible form and spoke a verse of praise before King Shuddhodana and all the Shakya relatives:

“Even if the three thousand worlds were filled with pure gold, The shine of a single ounce of Jambu gold would pale before it—utterly colorless. Even if Jambu gold filled all three thousand worlds, One ray of light from the Bodhisattva would eclipse it entirely, leaving it dim. His radiance is utterly perfect, adorned with the marks of a hundred blessings; Such a pure body—what need has it for outward ornaments? The glow of sun, moon, stars, and pearls, the light of Brahma, Indra, and all celestial beings— If set before the Bodhisattva’s body, none could even appear. His myriad features naturally shine, born from his own pure deeds in past lives, Not from the humble offerings of lesser beings. Put away your gifts, those precious jewels and adornments— You think them beautiful, but the Bodhisattva seeks nothing. They are not what he needs; better to give them to Chandaka.” The heavenly being spoke this verse, then vanished in an instant. The king and the Shakya clan were filled with wonder, Leaping with joy and exclaiming, “The Shakya lineage shall surely flourish.”
