The Peacock King Dhāraṇī Sūtra was translated during the Liang Dynasty by the eminent Indian monk Saṅghapāla. It is one of the important scriptures within the Esoteric division of Chinese Buddhism. This sūtra takes Mahāmāyūrī Vidyārājñī as its principal deity, detailing her sacred dhāraṇī and methods of practice, employed for dispelling calamities, removing poisons, and curing illnesses. The text emphasizes that reciting this dhāraṇī secures the protection of the Vidyārājñī, relieves all sufferings, and includes rituals, altar arrangements, and descriptions of merits and benefits. This scripture reflects the early spread of Esoteric Buddhism in China during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, exerting a profound influence on the later development of Chinese Esoteric Buddhism. It has been highly valued particularly in rites for seeking blessings and averting disasters, serving as a crucial text for the study of early Esoteric literature and practice.

Peacock King Mantra Sutra, Part One

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Sanghapala of Funan, Liang Dynasty

I pay homage to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. I pay homage to the seven Fully Enlightened Ones, and to the Śrāvaka Arhats, the three fruits, and the four stages of the path. I pay homage to Maitreya and the other Bodhisattvas, and to those accomplished in right practice. I am about to recite the Peacock King Mantra. May all the hosts of spirits listen to my words. Whether they dwell on the earth, in the sky, or in the water—gods, nāgas, asuras, māluta, kālūta, gandharvas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, piśācas, pṛthivī-devatās, bhūtas, kumbhāṇḍas, pūtanas, kaṭapūtanas, skandhas, ummādas, chāyās, apasmāras, and uttaraka—may they listen to my words.

Thus have I heard:

At one time the Buddha was staying in the Jetavana Grove, in the garden of Anāthapiṇḍada, in the Kingdom of Śrāvastī. At that time there was a monk named Svāti. He was young, newly gone forth, and had received full ordination not long before. He had just begun to study the Vinaya. While using a broom of twigs to prepare a bathing place for the community, a black snake bit the thumb of his right foot. The poison spread through his body. He collapsed to the ground, foaming at the mouth, his eyes rolling and staring upward.

Ananda saw his suffering and went to the Buddha. He fully reported it to the Buddha, saying, "How should he be treated and saved?"

The Buddha told Ananda, "Take my words, and with the Great Peacock King spell, remove the evil poison. Go to him, receive and protect him, and cause the monk Svāti to attain peace and comfort in body. You should establish the boundary of protection, from the devas, dragons, asuras, garuḍas, gandharvas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, bhūtas, piśācas, kumbhāṇḍas, and so forth—those who are untamable, whose food is unwholesome, evil spittle, evil shadow, evil views, evil writings, evil crossings, evil sprays, whether for one day, two days, three days, four days, up to seven days, half a month, or a month, or for a moment or for a long time, whether sudden cold or sudden heat, wind-cold, phlegm disorders, or all three illnesses together—cold, heat, and headache—may they all be removed and healed. Whether half-headache and inability to eat, eye pain, nose pain, ear pain, mouth pain, heart pain, head and cheek pain, throat pain, tooth wind, heart wind, chest and rib wind, back and abdomen wind, spleen and shin wind, hand and foot wind, bone and joint wind—by the Buddha's spiritual power, may the physical suffering of a certain person be removed, and may they be peaceful and happy day and night."

Then he spoke the spell thus:

"Thus, relying on water, on space, on Mount Sumeru—whether one-headed or two-headed—may they always be kind to me. May all spirits and dragons—those with no feet, two feet, four feet, or many feet—do me no harm. May they be kind to me in the place where I dwell, and to all living beings. Whether moving or unmoving, may all be at peace, free from all illness. May all who see virtue and goodness never give rise to harmful thoughts. May they think of me with kindness, remove poison, and accept me with care—thus protecting me. I bow to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. I bow to cessation and liberation. I bow to those already liberated. Brahmins who wish to eliminate evil dharmas should all pay homage. May protection be granted against all fears and chaos, all disasters and illnesses. May all poisons and all things unbeneficial be cut off, and may benefit always appear.

Previously, Ananda, in the southern part of the Himalayas, at the dwelling place of the Golden Light Peacock King, if one rises in the morning and recites this Great Peacock King mantra, the day will surely be peaceful.

At times, that peacock king did not recite this Great Peacock Wisdom King spell for protection and well-being. Instead, he wandered with many forest peahens from garden to garden, from park to park, from hill to hill—consumed by desire, lost in intoxication and delusion, moving about hand in hand, reckless and full of pride. He entered a mountain cave.

For a long time, an enemy who had been watching for his chance—whether a foe or a false friend—bound him with a peacock snare. As the peacock king was being taken away by his enemy, he thought to himself: "Only this Great Peacock Wisdom King has such a spell:

"Ananda! This Great Peacock King's heart-essence, by the Great Peacock King spell: whether entering a country's borders, reaching a forest hermitage, on the right road or wrong road, approaching a royal palace, encountering bandits, disputes, fire, water, enemies, or crowds, snake bites, or poisoned drink — in all fears, one should remember this spell. If wind, phlegm, and cold-heat combine, and one is touched by any one of the four hundred and four diseases, one should also remember it. If unwanted suffering arrives, one should also remember it. Why is that? Ananda! If a person is destined to be imprisoned, they may be freed merely by a fine; if destined for a whipping, they may be freed by a staff beating; if destined for a staff beating, they may be freed by a box on the ear; if destined for a box on the ear, they may be freed by angry scolding; if destined for angry scolding, they may be freed by admonishment; if destined for admonishment, they may be freed without a word being spoken. In this way one is freed and separated from all illness. Ananda! I do not see any god, human, Mara, Brahma, ascetic, or brahmin who, without being protected by this Great Peacock King spell, can be calm and at ease, eliminating punishment and poison. Having marked the boundary and marked the ground, none dare approach to cause terror. Whether gods, or the fathers and mothers of gods, the hosts of gods and goddesses; whether nagas, or the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters of nagas, the hosts of nagas and goddesses; whether asuras, or the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters of asuras, the hosts of asuras and goddesses; whether garudas, or the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters of garudas; whether gandharvas, or the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters of gandharvas; whether yaksas, or the fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters of yaksas; whether kinnaras, mahoragas, yaksas, raksasas, pretas, pisacas, bhutas, kumbhandas, putanas, kataputanas, skandhas, unmadas, sanyas, and apasmaras — all of them likewise constantly seek an opportunity against people, but by reciting and remembering this spell, they can never succeed. If such gods and others get an opportunity against a person, they can never return to their own heavenly hosts. Because this is so evident, one should remember it. The spell is as follows:"
