Biographies of Devout Women

Luo Yu's wife, Lady Fei

She was from Shu and was the daughter of Yue Zhi, the Inspector of Ningzhou in the Song dynasty. From youth, Lady Fei honored the Dharma. She recited the Lotus Sutra for several years. She once developed a heart ailment and was near death. She said to those close to her, "I have recited the scripture diligently and sincerely; I ought to have good blessings. I will not die so soon." After she had died, she revived. She said of herself that she had seen the Buddha come from the window, extend his hand, and rub her chest, whereupon her illness suddenly lifted. All the men and women in the house saw golden light illuminating the room and smelled a rare and fragrant scent. Yu's younger cousin came at that time to inquire after her illness and witnessed this spiritual response. She gave rise to deep faith, kept the precepts and a vegetarian diet for life, and often used this matter to teach and inspire her nephews and nieces. (Record of Strange Things)
