Only the Buddha has transcended the three realms. The Buddha appeared in this world for a great cause and awakened beings out of compassion—this is a timeless and indestructible good. The Imperial Preceptor of the Great Yuan Dynasty had deeply mastered the three vehicles; his nature and conduct were like spring—benevolent, majestic, and immeasurable. When the future Emperor was still a prince, he had long known the Preceptor's true transmission. With deep respect, he invited the Preceptor to personally instruct him. The Preceptor devoted himself with a calm heart, spreading the Emperor's legacy and widely promoting the school's teachings. He made known what he understood, crafted what he expounded, probed the texts and principles, and explored the meaning of the Dharma—brilliant as the sun and moon, vast as heaven and earth. Indeed, the matters of the Tathagata—who but a sage can illuminate them?
Master Xueyan, the General Regent, had an extraordinary presence unmatched in his age. His learning and insight surpassed others. Having served long at the Preceptor's Dharma seat, he silently translated this treatise and saw it spread throughout the world. Long ago, we met in Min, and our friendship shone like brothers. He firmly asked me to write a preface. But I am lost in the dreamlike sea of worldly affairs, my brush long idle. How could I bring light to such a profound teaching? He smiled and said, "You are too modest." I dared not refuse, and so wrote this preface.
