> Chapter 16: Dwelling in the House

> Greetings. This refers to speaking up to inquire about someone's age, years of ordination, whether they are living well and in good health, and whether their studies are progressing daily. If there are any words of praise or criticism, they should be expressed with joy and not left overnight. Offer mutual encouragement and do not speak ill of others behind their backs.

> When you are about to bring a lamp into the room, announce in advance to those inside, "A lamp is coming in." When you intend to put out the lamp, first ask the others in the room if they still need the light.

> Entering a room, announce yourself beforehand to avoid catching others off guard and causing embarrassment. When extinguishing a light, ask first, considering if someone else might still need it. Do not nail or damage walls to hang lamps or other objects. The karmic consequences are as described in the \*Sangha Protection Sutra\*. Always check lamps and candles to prevent accidents.

> Blowing out a candle is improper. It creates a foul odor that offends others, harms the tiny creatures drawn to the flame, and should not be done with the hand or a fan. Instead, gently pinch off the spent wick with a suitable object and quietly let it subside into the oil. Loud noises disturb the focused mind of others.

> If someone is ill, care for them with compassion from beginning to end.

> The sutra says: Among the eight fields of merit, caring for the sick is the foremost. In the Sutra on the Good Life, the Buddha spoke this verse: "One should look after the sick, inquire after those in distress. Good and evil bear their fruits, just as seeds yield their harvest. The World-Honored One is the father, the Dharma is the mother, fellow practitioners are brothers and sisters—through this, one attains liberation." The Great Vinaya states: Caring for the sick brings five merits: First, knowing what can and cannot be eaten. Second, not despising filth, spittle, or vomit. Third, having a compassionate heart, not seeking fame or gain. Fourth, being able to prepare medicine and care until recovery or the end. Fifth, being able to teach the Dharma to the patient, bringing them joy.

> When someone is sleeping, do not make noise by hitting things, or speak and laugh loudly.

> Echo and resonance. Things respond to sound.

> Do not enter another's home or courtyard without good reason.

> Therefore, without a reason, do not casually enter another's room or courtyard.
