Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Divine Spells of Xuanshi Bhadra

Translated by Zhu Tanwulan, Tripitaka Master from India during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was traveling through the country of Rajagriha and was staying among the trees where parrots lived. At that time, a certain monk, while between the Bamboo Grove and the city of Rajagriha, was bitten by a snake, possessed by a ghost, and robbed by thieves. When the Buddha saw this, he immediately went to where that monk was. The layman Xuan Shi Ba Tuo* accompanied the Buddha. Xuan Shi Ba Tuo then said to the Buddha, "I have a very powerful spell. I would like to recite it now." The Buddha replied, "Stop, stop, Ba Tuo! Do not let your spell cause any harm." Ba Tuo said to the Buddha, "In the future, nations will attack each other, thieves will rob one another, those who cause harm will continue to rob each other, ghosts will harm one another, and poisons will injure one another. If there are monks sitting beneath trees in the mountains, wearing patched robes or sitting in the open, I want the four groups of disciples to be free from harm, to be safe, healthy, and free from suffering."

The monk, deeply realizing the meaning of Ni-yu-zhe, Li-shou-li-ba-ti, Shan-yu-xi, Pi-ba-tuo-ni.

This spell cuts off harmful speech, cuts off all confusion, and cuts off all illness and pain. All the yakshas enter this state of absorption:

Sumana, Maha(1) Yahshanan, Maha(2) Yaksha Fan, Maha Maha(3) Yaksha, Inhala Chimaha(4) Yaksha Ahqipan Maha(5)

"Among all spirits and ghosts, these Yakshas are the most powerful. My name is Intu, and for those afflicted by desires and those who harm others, I cause them to lose their way, blinding you so that you cannot see anyone, and preventing them from taking advantage of you." At that moment, he called out:

Come, spirits who guard the path, great spirits who guard the path. Come swiftly, come greatly. Hold the torch that guards. Come, pure one, great guardian, great pure guardian. Hold the torch. Come, the yaksha guard, the one who vanquishes. Hold the torch. He who wears the crown, all-seeing, hold the torch. Great crowned one, all-seeing, hold the torch.
