Chapter 1: Praising Bodhicitta
The Buddha's wondrous Dharma is boundless in its essence. With right mind, the Buddha's children bow in reverence. The Buddha's sweet dew precepts offer protection; What I now praise and explain follows the Dharma entirely.
This teaching holds nothing unprecedented, Nor is it claimed as my own invention. Without thoughts of self or other, at this time, I contemplate and observe on my own.
When I generate this mind and observe, It allows my goodness to grow. Then I see this Saha world Is exactly the domain of that Buddha.
Hard it is to gain rebirth in this realm in this very moment; If reborn as human, one should celebrate. Reflect: if you separate from Bodhicitta, Coming here again—how could it be attained?
Like clouds covering the sky and darkness of night, A lightning flash appears in an instant— The Buddha's mighty benefit is likewise: An instant's intention brings people merit.
Therefore, though good roots are weak in strength, They can overpower great evil karma. Thus, if one generates Bodhicitta, This courageous goodness surpasses that.
Contemplate for countless eons without end How all the Buddhas declare this truth: One unhappy attains happiness; Infinite beings are saved and increased.
For sentient beings amidst all kinds of suffering, To free them from hundreds of terrors, To bring them hundreds of joys— One must never be parted from Bodhicitta.
The Sugata's children, though wrapped in obstacles, Walk through samsara without attachment. If Bodhicitta is spoken for even a moment, Gods and humans rejoice and bow in respect.
Even receiving an impure form Is like receiving a priceless Buddha statue. Like a healing pill that permeates all solid things— So too one should cultivate supreme Bodhicitta.
The Bodhicitta jewel's power is boundless; Its value is beyond worldly comparison. All who practice and train and walk the path Will receive and hold it firmly.
The banana tree bears no fruit yet bears fruit— When it bears fruit, the tree itself perishes. But the Bodhicitta tree is pure, Always bearing supreme fruit that never ends.
Those who have done terrible evil actions Are freed in an instant by relying on Bodhicitta. Firm in refuge, no great fear remains— Why don't foolish beings rely on it?
Like the great fire at the end of an age That instantly burns the firewood of karma, So does praising the Kind One—unending praise— That wise one is called truly excellent.
That awakened mind in its many aspects— Right wisdom is equality. The Bodhicitta vow-mind Pursues the Bodhicitta path.
Like one who desires to travel, The distinction is made. Once wisdom distinguishes, Action follows wisdom's use.
The Bodhicitta wish-mind Brings great results like samsara. Merit flows without interruption, Just as intention leads to action.
If all beings, limitless and vast, Are to be liberated, With a mind equal to theirs, The Bodhicitta vow never retreats.
Those in deep sleep, Also greatly intoxicated, Interrupt the flow of merit— Like empty space they possess nothing.
Beautiful Arms, you ask about Sentient beings of weak resolve: To attain liberation, Is it for oneself or for the Tathāgata?
Then one thinks to cure Sentient beings tormented by suffering. Once their suffering ends, Boundless merit is attained.
Sentient beings' suffering is endless— How can it be healed? Granting each one comfort Brings infinite virtue.
What is gained by helping parents Or one's family? What of gods and sages, Or pure-minded brahmins?
Those sentient beings, like past dreams, Do not seek their own benefit— They only wish to benefit others.
Sentient beings are the supreme treasure— Rare indeed is such rebirth! With every intention for others' good, Not focused solely on themselves.
The seeds of worldly joy, The medicine for worldly ills, The mind-jewel and those with merit— What more can be said?
How can all sentient beings attain all happiness? By generating Bodhicitta And making offerings to the Tathāgata.
Attachment to pleasures and delight Is like an enemy. Distance and closeness to it Follow from one's own intention.
Those who seek happiness Will experience endless suffering. But by accumulating virtuous joy, All suffering is removed.
Destroying the causes of confusion— Is this excellently achieved? By relying on spiritual teachers, That merit is thus attained.
If you act and dedicate the merit, Surely they will praise you in return. One who does good without seeking reward Is called a bodhisattva.
If one gives but a little food, Cultivating virtue and offering to the world, Though the offering be tiny as a mosquito, Happiness is gained for half a day.
How can one attain Buddhahood? Only by liberating all beings completely. If beings are as endless as space, The quest for omniscience seeks its own fulfillment.
The Buddha's deeply thinking children: When afflictions arise from one's own mind— Many afflictions, then many doubts— The Buddha says such a one falls into hell.
But if a Buddha's child generates Bodhicitta, The power of great evil is vanquished; Excellent results are won. Now I take refuge in the jewel-mind That saves beings and brings them joy.
