> Zili Weng, who gave himself the name Yunmeng, was a native of Shanxi in the Yue region, born into the common family of Qiu. At the time of his birth, his uncle dreamed of a divine being descending from the east, accompanied by an extraordinary procession of carriages and attendants. The next day, auspicious light filled the room, and a rare fragrance permeated the air as he was born. Even as an infant, his spirit was serene and abundant. By the time he was a child, he already resembled an adult, abstaining from worldly tastes. At fourteen, he left home to become a monk at Bao'en Temple, where he took refuge under Master Miaowu of Shanyuan and received ordination. The following year, he undertook full monastic precepts and studied scriptures such as the Lotus Sutra, the Shurangama Sutra, and the Lankavatara Sutra, thoroughly grasping their profound meanings. At that time, Miaowu presided over renowned temples across eastern and western Zhejiang, with several hundred disciples often studying under him. Master Zili served him diligently, fully inheriting his teachings. The essence of the "Threefold Contemplation in One Mind" became clear to him without doubt. At twenty-nine, he took up residence at Chongshou Temple, sharp and fresh like a newly whetted blade. Though some arrogant individuals withdrew, he later moved to Guangfu Temple, where he restored what had fallen into ruin and reclaimed what had been encroached upon—stone inscriptions from that time still remain. He then ascended to Yanqing Temple, greatly expanding the lecture hall, renewing its towers and halls, and increasing the annual offerings for the monastic community. When Gushan Temple was abandoned due to disputes among different Buddhist schools, Master Zili revived it, and the temple's founding legacy was passed down through the ages. When Guoqing Temple underwent reform under the Chan school, he stepped forward to settle the debates, and the tradition of "raining flowers" was entrusted to his fellow disciples. He also planned and promoted the restoration of Jigugong Temple, establishing it as a source of renewal. Assessing the terrain, he revitalized Yanfu Temple, guiding its reconstruction and revival. Down to Yaoyuan Temple and the Five Hundred Arhats Temple, he expanded and maintained them with care. At Yushan, he built Bao'en Temple as a place for retreat, and at Longjing, he founded Anyang Temple as a refuge for students from all directions. As for Bao'en Temple in Shanxi, it was established to honor his teacher's hometown. In all these endeavors, he erected grand buildings and endowed them with land, demonstrating deep gratitude and diligent intent. Master Zili twice journeyed to the imperial court. Emperor Shizu, the Divine and Martial Emperor, summoned him to inquire about the essence of Buddhism, bestowed upon him the Qixiang Hall, presented him with a red golden-hemmed robe, and granted him the title "Buddha-Wisdom Profound Discernment." Imperial edicts were frequently issued, bringing glory to all directions. The prominence of the teaching school over the Chan school was largely due to his efforts. Zhang Bocun of the Hanlin Academy, a leading figure in the teachings of expedient and ultimate truth and a master of the perfect and sudden school, remarked that this was no empty praise. On the sixteenth day of the seventh month in the year Dade Dingyou, he left a verse and passed away peacefully at Nanzhu Yanfu. Eight days later, his disciples enshrined his remains in a stupa at Longjing's Anyang Temple. He lived sixty-seven years and spent fifty-three as a monk. His Dharma heirs included Zhi'an, Yuanjing, Xingcheng, Jingzhen, Zongqu, and over forty others. Throughout his life, Master Zili presided over seven renowned temples and restored two centers of practice, received two imperial edicts, and was esteemed threefold for his virtue and wisdom. His radiant influence attracted princes, ministers, and scholars who sought his teachings, and even esteemed masters bowed in respect, all owing to his profound legacy.
