The Third Dunhuang Manuscript of the Sayings of Monk Shenhui: *Miscellaneous Dialogues and Inquiries of the Master from Nanyang* Compiled by the Tang Dynasty Monk Liu Cheng Collated by Modern Scholar Hu Shi This document records the debates between Shenhui, founder of the Southern School of Chan Buddhism, and the Northern School during the Kaiyuan era at the Huatai Assembly. Its core content promotes Huineng’s doctrine of sudden enlightenment, criticizes the Northern School’s gradual cultivation approach, and asserts that all beings inherently possess Buddha-nature and can attain awakening instantaneously. The discovery of this Dunhuang manuscript provides primary source evidence for the early history of Chan Buddhism, particularly the Southern School’s struggle for orthodox status. It holds significant academic value for studying the development of Chan thought and sectarian controversies, serving as an important historical document in the process of Buddhism’s integration into Chinese culture.
