> Chapter 6: On Sincere Response

> Long ago, when Duke Jing of Song moved the stars, and Lu Yang turned back the sun; when Meng Zong drew forth bamboo shoots in the frozen garden, and Liu Yin gathered herbs in the frosty dawn; when the clouds of Gan Liang gathered before the words were finished, and the rain of Jing Mountain fell wherever the carriage passed—how much more, then, for one who is free from attachment and thought, whose sincerity is sure to be answered; who acts without striving or gain, and is moved to respond in kind? He practices compassion without grasping, his deep benevolence reaching everywhere. He guides with wisdom beyond knowing, his sage insight extending far and wide. His virtue embraces all, not just the three realms; his clarity illuminates every darkness, not merely the ten directions. Thus, the chapter on sincere response follows hereafter.

> Monk Qingxu of the Huiyi Temple in Zizhou, whose lay surname was Tang. In the sixth month of the first year of the Shengli era, in Yuzhou, a severe drought occurred. Officials and commoners prayed for rain but received no response. The people were anxious and did not know what to do. The monk then entered the meditation hall and stood before the Buddha, sincerely making a vow: "May the great compassion of all Buddhas bring joy to the Dragon Kings, so that sweet rain may fall and relieve the suffering of the people. I, your disciple, vow to recite the Diamond Sutra one hundred times for the Dragon Kings by noon tomorrow. May the rain fall by midday." By noon the next day, as he finished reciting the sutra, rain began to fall. Ditches overflowed, fields were thoroughly soaked, and the moisture was abundant. Such was the miraculous response.

> In the fifth month of the second year of the Shengli era, Qingxu was spending the summer retreat at Changle Temple in the Changle Mountains of Tongbai County, Tangzhou. At that time, a severe drought struck, withering the crops and scorching the fields. The local people beat drums and set fires on the mountains, praying for rain. Yet despite their efforts for over ten days, there was no sign of rain. Then, the villagers brought muddy water into the temple, intending to drench the monks in protest. The monks said to them, "Patrons, do not defile and soak the monastic community. This humble monk will pray for rain on your behalf. By tomorrow, the rain will surely be sufficient." Starting from noon on the twentieth day of the fifth month, Qingxu entered the meditation hall and recited the Prajñāpāramitā Sutra. By midday the following day, rain began to fall. In a short while, it became abundant, soaking the high and low lands alike.

> In the fifth month of the second year of the Dazu era, a severe drought struck. By imperial decree, officials across the prefectures and counties were ordered to pray for rain. In the capital, twenty monks were gathered to conduct the rain-prayer rituals, yet not a single drop fell. Among them was the monk Qingxu. He went to Fengguo Temple to seek advice from Master Fuli on how to proceed with the rain prayers. Fuli asked him, "Venerable Master, what method will you use to pray for rain?" Qingxu replied, "I will recite the Eleven-Faced Guanyin Mantra and the Diamond Sutra with utmost sincerity, and through this, pray for rain." Fuli asked, "How many days will it take for the rain to be sufficient?" Qingxu answered, "Three days and three nights. The rain will surely be ample." Fuli said with displeasure, "Even if I grant you seven days to pray, if after seven days there is still no rain, I will have you shackled and handed over to Xue Jichang, and you will become a starving ghost." Hearing this, Qingxu felt even more determined. He responded to Fuli, "If by mealtime tomorrow the rain has not yet fallen, and if it does not continue for three full days, then the rain will surely not be widespread." Qingxu then entered the meditation hall and recited the sutras with utmost devotion. By mealtime the next day, rain began to fall, reaching about four or five inches before clearing again. Fuli's disciple Yuanji said to Qingxu, "Tomorrow marks the third day. Right now, there isn't a cloud in the sky for miles. I wonder what proof you will have, Venerable Master?" Qingxu replied, "Do not worry. The rain will surely be sufficient within three days." As evening approached the next day, the sky remained completely cloudless. Qingxu, with sincere and earnest determination, feared that his efforts might be in vain. He once again invoked all the great bodhisattvas, arhats, holy monks, and all virtuous sages and disciples in the ten directions, saying, "Today, with one heart, I pray for rain for all sentient beings in the dharma realm. If tonight the rain is not sufficient, I will give up my life here for the sake of all living beings." With utmost sincerity and devotion, he recited the Diamond Sutra. As the second watch of the night was about to end, a torrential downpour began. By dawn, the rainfall had exceeded a foot, and within a radius of five hundred li, the nourishing rain was abundant everywhere. Such is the majestic and awe-inspiring power of divine might. From then on, whenever rain prayers were needed, they were conducted at Fengguo Temple during the summer retreat.
