Tang Dynasty Practitioner Gan Zhi (Dharma heir of Nanquan Yuan)

The practitioner Gan Zhi of Chizhou. One day he went to Nanquan's place to hold a vegetarian feast. Huangbo was the head seat. The practitioner said, "Please distribute the wealth." Huangbo said, "The two kinds of giving—material and Dharma—are equal, without distinction." Gan said, "Spoken that way, how can you deserve my offering?" and immediately started to leave. After a moment he came back in and said, "Please distribute the wealth." Huangbo said, "The two kinds of giving—material and Dharma—are equal, without distinction." Gan then distributed the offering.

(Cuiyan Zhen said: "The practitioner Gan Zhi—a clever fellow who lost his footing. Huangbo distributing wealth—when did he ever dream of it?" Miaoxi cited Cuiyan's words and said: "Both alike are following the crooked and chasing the evil. This Yunju Arhat, however, is a bit better." Chushi Qi said: "Thus, thus—raise up Gan Zhi, push down Huangbo. Not thus, not thus—raise up Huangbo, push down Gan Zhi. But what about within 'thus' there being 'not thus,' and within 'not thus' there being 'thus'? What then? A lion bites the person; Han Lu chases the clod.")

On another day he went to the temple to hold a rice gruel meal, and asked Nanquan to do the chanting. Nanquan then struck the wooden clapper and said, "Please, assembly, for the sake of the cat and the white ox, recite the Mahāprajñāpāramitā." Gan shook out his sleeves and left. After the gruel, Nanquan asked the monastic manager, "Where is the practitioner?" The manager said, "He left right then." Nanquan then smashed the pot.

(Miaoxi said: "His heart does not betray others; his face shows no shame.")

Gan always received and entertained those who came and went. A monk asked, "Practitioner, receiving guests is not easy." Gan said, "It is like feeding donkeys and feeding horses." The monk gave up and left. There was a monk living in a hut who was collecting donations of goods. Gan said, "I have a question. If you can answer, I will give." Then he wrote the character for "heart" and asked, "What character is this?" "The character 'heart.'" He then asked his wife, "What character?" His wife said, "The character 'heart.'" Gan said, "My own wife could also live in a hut." The monk had no reply, and Gan gave nothing. He also asked another monk, "Where do you come from?" "I come from Weishan." Gan said, "A monk once asked Weishan, 'What is the meaning of the Ancestor's coming from the West?' Weishan raised his whisk. Elder, how do you understand Weishan's meaning?" "Borrowing the thing to illumine the mind; attaching to the object to reveal the principle." Gan said, "You had best go back to Weishan."

(Baofu heard of this and raised his hand, then turned it over.)

Yaoshan sent the offering-master to collect donations from the practitioner Gan. He asked, "Where do you come from?" "I come from Yaoshan." Gan said, "What did you come for?" "To teach and convert." Gan said, "Did you bring the medicine?" "What illness does the practitioner have?" Gan then gave two ingots of silver, thinking, "If there is someone in the mountains, this will be returned; if no one, let it be." The master returned and submitted the donation list. Yaoshan asked, "Why have you returned so quickly?" The master said, "A question about the Dharma matched; I obtained two ingots of silver." Yaoshan had him recount the words. After the master recounted them, Yaoshan said, "Take it back to him quickly. You have been robbed." The master took it back. Gan said, "So there really is someone there," and added more silver to the gift.

(Tong'an Xian said: "Had I known the practitioner would ask that, I would never have said 'I come from Yaoshan.'")
