The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Xiyan Liaohui was compiled by his disciples Xiuyi, Jingyuan, Zongqing, Jixun, Zongying, and others. Master Liaohui, a monk of the Linji school during the Southern Song dynasty, was a disciple of Master Wuzhun Shifan and was active in the mid-thirteenth century. This record contains his Dharma talks, dialogues, verses, and letters, embodying the core teachings of the Linji school, which emphasize directly pointing to the mind, seeing one’s true nature, and attaining enlightenment. As an important Chan text from the Song dynasty, it serves not only as a primary source for studying Master Liaohui and Southern Song Chan thought but also as an authoritative work for understanding the development and transmission of Chan Buddhism during that period, holding significant value in Buddhist history.
