引言
Introduction
The *Pramāṇavārttika* (*Treatise on Valid Cognition*) is a commentary composed by the great master Dharmakīrti to explain Dignāga's *Pramāṇasamuccaya* (*Compendium of Valid Cognition*). The text is divided into four chapters:
**Chapter One: Inference for One's Own Purpose** – This chapter explains the necessary conditions (such as correct reasons) for a debater to generate inferential understanding in their own mind.
**Chapter Two: Establishing Valid Cognition** – This chapter explains the meaning of the homage verse in the *Compendium of Valid Cognition*, establishing the Buddha as the ultimate authority for the world.
**Chapter Three: Direct Perception** – Direct perception serves as the foundation upon which inference relies. This chapter provides a detailed explanation of the definition, types, and apparent forms of direct perception.
**Chapter Four: Inference for Others** – This chapter extensively explains the merits and defects of the logical reasons used in arguments, clarifying the methods for helping others generate inferential understanding.
This treatise represents the culmination of the science of logic and reasoning (hetuvidyā), serving as a standard text for the study of Buddhist logic throughout the world. It has been widely propagated in Tibetan Buddhism for several centuries and is required reading for those studying Buddhist philosophy. However, it remains virtually unknown among Chinese Buddhists. Despite my limited abilities, I have undertaken to translate the original text into Chinese and, based on the great commentary by the master Gyaltso, have compiled a concise explanatory version. It is my hope that this may offer some benefit to Chinese scholars of Buddhist logic.
