Praise to Great Guanyin, Chapter 6
Composed by Wang Bo of the Tang Dynasty
I have heard that the Great Being of Perfect Penetration, named Guanyin, reaches out to beings, benefits their lives, and appears in response to their needs. From the eastern end of the universe, in the Cakravāla Ocean, clouds and waves surge around a golden mountain. A sacred palace rises like a realm of crystal. There, on a majestic jeweled throne, the Bodhisattva sits serenely in their true form. Their compassionate countenance is warm and vast, bright and pure, appearing in a white-robed guise. They wear cloud-like silken garments, woven from lotus threads, whose hues shimmer like frost in the cold. Adorned with a necklace that echoes their heart, whose woven patterns are as radiant as glistening snow. Verdant light meets a jeweled canopy, exquisite and delicate as the five-colored clouds of an immortal island. A dazzling blaze from mani gems makes the flower crown of a hundred treasures shine brilliantly. Their eyebrows are slender arcs of black, like the crescent autumn moon above a sea gate. Their deep blue eyes, with a double pupil, resemble a fresh blue lotus blooming on the water's surface. Their teeth are arranged like jade, their tongue shines like red sandalwood. A single bright pearl of a mouth glows like a bimba fruit, and their cheeks are subtly flushed, as if smoothed with amber. On a tranquil, emerald-green wave, their perfect image appears, emitting golden and white light. Within the expanse of subtle white light, a sublime realm manifests: the realms of Buddhas and the paradise of immortals. Then, like clouds and thunder, they proclaim the secret golden words of all Buddhas. Brahma and Śakra rain down flowers, praising the wondrous and rare deeds of the holy one. Dragon kings and dragon daughters offer precious treasures. Celestial and earthly immortals play music. For those in isolated and desperate straits, they become a ford or a bridge. On vast, perilous waves, they rescue those in sudden danger. They hear the cries of suffering beings and respond to their needs, just as the reflection of a single moon appears in ten thousand waters, or as a great bell resounds through a thousand valleys. Therefore, the sutra says: In times of royal punishment, thieves, floods, fires, drowning, burning, evil dragons, evil ghosts, poison, venomous snakes; if pushed off a vajra mountain, or blown by a fierce wind into the land of rākṣasas; facing a battlefield, or caught in a thunderstorm; if one earnestly calls out to Guanyin, liberation comes at once. The Bodhisattva possesses inconceivable great vows and the spiritual power of boundless intention. With a compassionate heart, they vow to save beings in the sahā world, and their teachings reach everywhere in this impure land. Truly, they pervade every atom and every realm. They respond everywhere and see everything. No one is too far or near to turn to them. Every vow and every plea is answered. Their merits are as numerous as the Ganges' sands, immeasurable in a billion eons. From afar, I gaze at Mount Potalaka and bow my head, offering this song of praise.
