In the early summer of the 17th year of the Hongwu reign, I sailed the seas and traveled through the mountains, carefully observing the sacred scenery. Suddenly, I saw that the waters and the sky were one in color—pure as lapis lazuli. The myriad forms of existence stood out distinctly, all clearly appearing at once. The wondrous visions I witnessed were too many to describe fully. For this reason, I felt such joyful excitement that I forgot whether my physical body was still in the human world. I truly understood: when the Tathagata taught the Avatamsaka Sutra, he entered the Samadhi of the Ocean Seal—this was certainly not a deception.
By chance, in the winter of the 28th year of the Hongwu reign, I dreamed of traveling through that very same realm, exactly as before. So then I lit incense and made a bow from afar, offering this humble insight in the form of a verse of praise.
The Bodhisattva forever dwells in the Sahā Ocean, Moved by compassionate vows, deep and vast, without bias or change. Clearly manifesting in the mystical realm east of the azure sea, Appearing in all places, nowhere absent. The samadhi they have realized— How could it be divided into east or west? The great eye of Maheśvara emerges, Eight-sided, open and luminous. The ocean seal shines, blazing and clear; Like an endless river, its wisdom proclaims the true essence. White flowers bloom upon the small rock cliffs; Heavenly fragrance fills every realm. Purple bamboo and sandalwood grow into forests; Peacocks and Kalaviṅka birds sing hymns. In former times, the Bodhisattva personally roamed the sea, Where Mount Lu rose, its peak reflected on the waves. Could this be the true realm of perfect penetration? The White-Robed, wondrous form rides a lotus boat. Looking all around, The vastness stretches beyond comprehension. Above, it reaches the heavenly river; Below, it peers into the Dragon King's palace. Glittering waves glow with hidden fire; The ocean's voice roaring day and night with the sky's wind. Clouds spread like a silver realm; The ground is carpeted with golden sands. Crystal and lapis inlaid, Like the udumbara flower. Watching the sun rise over Fusang from Potala Mountain, The red orb surges forth like a celestial chariot. Yet this wondrous vision is not ultimate reality; The Universal Gate appears as if in a dream. Phantom pavilions rise within the ethereal expanse; Networks of jewels shimmer, their radiance interweaving. Sound is not real sound; Form is not true form. It is a world apart—a mysterious realm beyond all knowing. Walking, sitting, dwelling in a crystal palace, Enjoying the pure wind and the moon's clear light. The Ten Sages and Three Worthies— Even they find it hard to cross. Endless streams swirl and merge, Hidden currents nourish the Four Great Continents, Moistening all beings as gentle rain. Now I bow and offer praise, Hoping the Compassionate One will see from afar. Cast away seeing, hearing, and knowing; Sweep away words, silence, separation, and subtlety. Thoroughly overturn the ocean of birth and death, And grant all beings sudden realization of the Buddha's enlightenment.
