The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Jieshi Zhipeng was compiled by his disciples Zhengxian, Zongtan, Yanhui, Jingqiu, Zhijin, Zhichen, and Zuyin. It contains the teachings, public lectures, instructions to followers, dialogues, and verses of Jieshi Zhipeng, a distinguished master of the Linji school during the Song Dynasty. This work systematically reflects the Linji school’s approach of directly pointing to the mind and realizing one’s inherent Buddha-nature. As a disciple of Xutang Zhiyu, Master Zhipeng was an active figure in Southern Song Chan circles. His recorded sayings are known for their sharp language and profound insight, making them an essential text for studying the thought and practice of the Linji school in the Song Dynasty. With its lasting influence on later Chan development, this collection is included in major Buddhist canons such as the Taishō Tripiṭaka.
