The *Xudeng Cungao* (Continuation of the Lamp Records) was compiled and edited by the eminent Ming dynasty monk Tongwen and assembled by Shi Pei. It stands as a significant continuation of the Chinese Chan (Zen) "lamp records" style of historical texts. Following the format of the *Wudeng Huiyuan* (Compendium of the Five Lamps), this work primarily collects the recorded sayings, dialogues of encounter, and biographical accounts of Chan masters from the Linji and Caodong schools from the late Song dynasty through the Ming period. Its purpose was to continue the Dharma lineage and preserve the records of master-discipleship transmission. Not only does it reflect the developmental landscape and philosophical characteristics of Chan Buddhism during the Ming dynasty, but it also provides invaluable source material for later generations studying Chan history. Holding a pivotal position in Buddhist history that connects past and future, this text is one of the key scriptures for understanding the transmission and evolution of Chan Buddhism during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
