Chapter 3: Renouncing Self-Attachment
不淨常盈流, 實罪惡之器;
常諂曲為心, 寧免老死怖;
We seek no personal gain, No praise, no fame, no food, drink, or material things. What could anyone do to truly harm me?
This body should be seen as a source of disgust, A source of harm, like a robber or an enemy. It creates so many faults and errors, Always delighting in unwholesome actions.
Furthermore, this body is the home of all illness, Always flowing with impurities, truly a vessel of evil. It dwells close to the mind, yet has no thought or awareness. At the moment of death, it becomes a horrifying sight.
The three factors of life—warmth, consciousness, and vitality— Are all abandoned together at that moment. Like a withered log, senseless and unaware, It decays and oozes foul fluids.
Foolish people in their prime Become confused, arrogant, and indulgent. But in a moment, without any pause, They change and age into decrepitude.
Relying on wealth, they live extravagantly, And commit many evil deeds. When their life is about to end, They suffer intense agony and torment.
If you take no delight in the true Dharma, What makes you different from a non-human being? You turn away from the city of Nirvana And dwell instead on the wrong path.
By cultivating vast good deeds and merit, One may be reborn again in the human realm. But they should board the vessel of wisdom To sail forever across the ocean of existence.
This body is as fleeting as a lightning flash, As real as a city of celestial illusions. So why do you constantly feel anger or delight At the actions of others?
This body is not firm or durable; It moves and changes only temporarily. The mind is always deceitful and twisted— How can it escape the fear of aging and death?
It is a city of disease, A dwelling place of sorrow and worry. Like a field of soil, it receives seeds That can grow into wholesome or unwholesome actions.
If a person, through generosity, ethical conduct, Compassion, and wisdom, adorns their body, Only this wholesome cause and condition Is truly strong and secure.
Furthermore, it is said that this body Is the abode of the elements. If one can clearly and wisely understand it, They can quickly attain liberation.
This explains that the own-nature of the body's elements Is merely an illusion, a false concept. If you cling to others' aggregates and elements, You are foolish and lack the path to escape.
If you possess external wealth But internally lack peace and stillness, Yet know the nature of the body well, Then you can transcend all suffering.
By being attached to guarding your own possessions, You only increase your own suffering. All kinds of fear will follow you— The fear of rulers, thieves, water, and fire.
If you abandon unwholesome wealth, Then there will be no more obstacles. To let go brings lasting peace; To cling and hoard brings only blame.
Thus, you should clearly and truly understand The nature of your own and others' aggregates and elements. Cultivate concentration and study the scriptures— Thus you will burn away the heap of afflictions.
Therefore, a wise person Carefully examines this body. By fully understanding the nature of its elements, They are called one who has found liberation.
