Chapter 10: Abstaining from Alcohol
常居癡暗中, 趣死之階漸;
They say alcohol is poison, One should stay far away. If you delight in drinking, You ruin virtuous ways.
If someone is near alcohol, Wisdom cannot grow in them; They have no share in liberation, Therefore always keep distant.
It is the first error, As taught by the wise: It harms both self and others, Therefore keep distant always.
If one enjoys drinking, They love worldly talk, Much speech leads to quarrels— Thus keep distant always.
Drinking wastes wealth, Brings drowsiness and laziness; Such are its harms— Therefore keep distant always.
From alcohol arises desire, Likewise anger too; Ignorance grows in turn— Thus keep distant always.
Alcohol is the root of disaster, Making all senses scatter; Later one falls into hell, All ruined by drink.
They laugh loudly in jest, Speak harsh and violent words, Slander good-hearted people, Then later feel fear and dread.
Drunk and disordered, They can't tell good from bad; Ignorant as an animal— Therefore one should stay away.
If someone is trapped by drink, They collapse as if dead; Seeking pleasure and long life, What benefit is there?
It is the root of all difficulties, The source of all harms; Always dwelling in dark delusion, A staircase toward death.
Later they fall into hell, Then are reborn among ghosts, And among animal kinds— All destroyed by alcohol.
Alcohol is poison among poisons, A chronic disease among illnesses; Suffering added to more suffering, So say the wise.
It destroys wisdom and life, Drains the treasure of Dharma, Ruins pure spiritual practice— All because the mind delights in drink.
Even those once respected, When drunk know no distinction; Laughed at by the world, They feel no shame.
Alcohol is like a sharp axe, Able to damage all good qualities; Drinkers have no shame, And are despised by others.
If someone is confused by alcohol, Indulging without end, They do no good deeds— They have no knowledge, no wisdom.
If one enjoys drinking, Their mind becomes chaotic; Sometimes they burst into laughter, Sometimes they flare in anger.
In this life and the next, Ignorance always veils their wisdom; It burns away liberation's path— All under alcohol's control.
If one craves the taste of drink, It's like eating the kimpala fruit: Sweet at first, then poison— So say the wise.
Therefore the wise one Deeply warns against alcohol; Their mind doesn't even think of it— Drinking only brings burning distress.
Those wealthy who always drink, Even gods surpass them; All their joys and pleasures, Later all fall apart.
Beings confused by drink, Their minds perpetually disordered; Dragged along by delusion, They cling to its flavor.
Know alcohol is like a rope: Deluded attachment is hard to untie; Better to fall into hell Than ever touch alcohol.
When they smell its scent, The foolish instantly delight in drinking; Therefore when seeing alcohol, One should turn away.
If seen, desire arises; If touched, the scent triggers craving; By smelling its fragrance, The mind cannot stop.
Thus alcohol is poison, Breeding countless faults; It ruins complexion, strength, and fame— All from drinking it.
They speak madly, Stare blankly without focus; Sometimes fall asleep unaware, All actions forgotten.
Sprawled on the ground, Laughed at by women; Their body doesn't move, Like a withered log.
Lying drunk, people see them And think they've died; Those in the know all say: "This is what drinking does."
One who always loves drink Dwells in thirty-six faults; When you know these faults, Then there is constant peace.
A noble family name, Is stained by alcohol; That person, like a reed flower, Soon falls and is cast away.
If one enjoys drinking, They're carried away by circumstances; Falling into the water of carelessness, Drifting, hard to escape.
Dragged by situations, They can't tell good from bad; In pure and beautiful gardens, What need is there to drink?
If you delight in alcohol's taste, Dangers and disasters arise; You fall into hell, Suffering every torment.
Drinking produces delusion; From delusion, you create many wrongs; The foolish mind loves it— How can it ever stay away?
Developing intense addiction, You receive extremely heavy retribution; If you can leave that fault behind, Then you'll have no worries.
First it harms your wisdom, Then it destroys your joy; Therefore the wise Always reject and abandon alcohol.
If someone approaches drink, They are like a kite in the sky; Always blinded by delusion, Thus I say alcohol is poison.
Regarding alcohol as poison, Is the highest and deepest joy; By upholding pure precepts, One would rather drink molten copper.
If one loves drinking, They cannot escape their faults; Their delusion grows deeper, They always stay in bad rebirths.
Though drinking is just one fault, It can give rise to all evils; Therefore one should restrain it— Guarding the mind is the foundation.
A monk who loves drinking, Abandons the forest hermitage; Loses one-pointed concentration, Does not reflect on the Dharma.
By delighting in drink, Their mind burns with distress; They cling to what is unwholesome, Destroying the benefits of both lives.
They lose dignified conduct, Neglect their duty to teach; Their words and actions contradict— What use is empty speech?
Not understanding themselves, How can they enlighten others? Uttering coarse, harsh words— This is not true teaching.
Going against right principles, The wise all criticize them; Poor and despised by people— All from drinking alcohol.
They don't remember the past, Forget the present too; What can they know of the future? Alcohol blinds all three times.
They lose reputation and dignity, Their mind is always scattered; Bringing forth all kinds of faults— This is being trapped by drink.
If one stays away from alcohol, They have pure precepts and concentration; Dwelling in the highest peace, They reach the deathless state.
