Chapter 11: Taming the Mind

智者善持心, 住最上安隱;
牛糞與摩尼, 二種亦如是;

The Buddha proclaimed the turning of the Dharma-wheel, Teaching that the body is impermanent. With wine and with women, Be careful not to indulge in heedlessness.

This mind is like that king, Which rules freely over the world. It can cause all beings, To fall into deep and dangerous difficulties.

All karma is created by the mind; Confusion gives rise to fear and dread. The wise person skillfully holds the mind, Abiding in the highest peace and security. It can lead to excellent states, And also drag one into evil paths. If free from defilement and serene, One then realizes the true and eternal fruit.

If one delights in teaching the Dharma, Intention serves as the guide. Because the mind is pure, Then supreme conduct is accomplished.

If a person skillfully controls the mind, They are not turned by the mind. Abandoning all afflictions, Like the sun dispelling darkness.

Again, that mind is like an enemy, An enemy that does not arise from elsewhere. The fire at the end of an age burns Mount Sumeru; The fire of the mind is just like this.

The foolish are conquered by the mind; Their senses become unrestrained. This gives rise to suffering, And they are far from enlightenment.

The enemy arises from one's own mind; Apart from the mind, what is there? It binds all sentient beings, Dragging them to the abode of Yama.

If one delights in objects of desire, And does not cultivate the true Dharma, Foolishly treading the wrong path, Then they fall into hell.

The mind is like fire among fires, The most supreme and difficult to tame. Because it is so hard to tame, One must endure extreme suffering.

If one indulges the mind’s freedom, It constantly gives rise to various faults. By skillfully leaving behind those defiling desires, One is not oppressed by suffering.

Because such a mind arises, One then experiences such results. Doing good is the cause of purity; Committing evil brings the result of suffering.

The mind creates that karma; Through karma, the result is experienced. When mind and karma correspond, One experiences the cycle of rebirth.

If a person, through that mind, Creates various evil deeds, They are boiled and burned, For a long time by the fires of hell.

The mind creates all offenses; The mind experiences their results. Know that this mind, Arises from causes and conditions.

Sentient beings are deceived by the mind; Freely, they commit various faults. Falling into hell, They give rise to great terror.

One should rely on the true Dharma, And not follow the mind in creating evil. Wholesome conduct is always peaceful and at ease; Unwholesome conduct is simply non-Dharma.

Everything is created by the mind; The result is also obtained from the mind. If the mind gives rise to various things, Then that result is also thus.

The mind is like a painter, Who paints all beings in the three realms. There is no good place to abide, For one who does not follow the mind’s movements.

Again, the mind is the root, Which gives rise to both liberation and bondage. Good karma leads to liberation; Unwholesome karma brings entanglement.

Sentient beings fall into the net of karma, Conquered by the mind. They do not seek to approach enlightenment, Like the blind who do not see the path.

This mind is of a single kind, Yet it can create all kinds of karma. Whether it is karma or that mind, They pervade the three states of existence.

Again, it is like the five colors, Which can appear in various ways. Relying on the five sense objects, It follows and turns everywhere.

Like the world’s painters, Whom all people can see. Know that the painter, the mind, Is so subtle that none can see it.

Like images on a wall— Their beauty or ugliness depends on the painter. The conditions of good and evil karma, Are all created by the mind.

This mind constantly thinks, Day and night, without a moment’s pause. According to the karma it creates, The results it receives are all similar.

If one is subdued by the mind, They delight in doing all that is unwholesome. At death, they give rise to terror, And cannot escape from suffering.

Karma is like that painting, Appearing everywhere. Because it is created by the mind, That result follows accordingly.

Various karmas are distinct; The results received are also thus. Driven by the mind, They race through the three realms.

If a person follows the mind, They create all kinds of karma. One who skillfully tames the mind, Realizes the true and eternal bliss.

This mind follows where it goes; Sometimes violent and cruel, sometimes fickle. Excellent indeed is the taming of that mind; When the mind is still, there is no suffering.

If a person controls the mind skillfully, They remove all defects and troubles. One free from defects is a wise person; They do not experience suffering.

All suffering arises from the mind; Know that it is not obtained from others. Oppression that is hard to bear, All comes from the mind’s restlessness.

Gods, dragons, asuras, Yakshas, and pishachas— All have the mind as their master, Pervading all places of the three states.

The mind can lead one to the heavens, And cause birth in the human world; Even to all evil paths, Like a wheel turning, without difference.

The mind is pulled by objects; The foolish become confused and lost. Because attachment arises from the mind, They dwell in measureless suffering.

The mind, in its foolish actions, Is violent, evil, and has great power. It can be spoken of, but not seen; Moment by moment, it swiftly arises and ceases.

The wise skillfully tame, The mind’s various defects. Then they transcend Mara’s net, And reach the other shore.

The mind can give rise to doubt and confusion, To deceit and crookedness, moving restlessly. If one relies on that mind, They seek to enter dangerous difficulties.

One should abandon the mind’s faults; Then the sense faculties become calm. Not clinging to wrongdoing or what is not Dharma, They perfectly penetrate ultimate reality.

Attaining the supreme meditative states, Arising from the causes and conditions of the mind. Falling into evil paths, Also arises from that mind.

This mind has the power, To create various kinds of karma. In the realm of space, It does not rest for a moment.

That mind is difficult to understand, And is always without form. It leads to birth in the world; Without the mind, one cannot go.

The body creates various karmas: Where does it go? Where does it abide? Those results are all visible; That mind cannot be seen.

This mind is difficult to tame, Stupid, dark, and sees nothing. It can lead sentient beings, Swiftly towards hell.

This mind can commit offenses, And also cultivate meritorious deeds. Knowing it to be like an illusion, One constantly relies on the right path.

This mind—its going is unknown; Its coming also cannot be seen. It can drag sentient beings Back and forth for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes.

A sharp sword cannot cut it; A blazing fire cannot burn it. But a foolish, ignorant person Is destroyed by it.

This karma-rope is strong, Able to bind foolish sentient beings. For hundreds of thousands of lifetimes, Pulling it does not break it.

This mind, in a single moment, Creates wholesome and unwholesome karma. One who can tame that mind Finds peace and joy everywhere.

Entering the six sense-doors, Enjoying various objects, The mind drags those sentient beings, Unaware, falling into dangerous difficulties.

Space is originally bright and clear; Water's nature is always clear and still. If the mind is like that, It leads to supreme goodness.

Seeking after objects, Constantly thinking of union and contact, The mind relies on the sense faculties, Like a king with his attendants.

This mind constantly races, Wherever the body goes. Both have mutual power, Revolving in the ocean of the three states.

The karma it creates is pervasive; All is caused by the mind. Without wholesome conditions, Scant pleasure cannot be obtained.

One should seek the true Dharma, Cultivating various meditations. If the mind departs from all evil, It is like the sun emerging from clouds.

If the mind is well-established in stillness, Then right view arises. A layperson who gives rise to pure faith Will escape the difficulties of rebirth.

If the mind does not create evil, Defects do not arise. Free from afflictions, pure, One is always born in heaven.

This mind follows the sense faculties, Swiftly flowing and turning. One who skilfully guards the mind Will later be born in the heavens.

If one is driven by the mind, Creating all kinds of offenses, Relying on improper conduct, They remain long in the cycle of rebirth.

This mind, in an instant, Has hundreds of thousands of arisings and ceasings. Its nature is only lightness and movement, Like an illusion, unreal.

This mind has great power, Racing without a moment’s pause. If wisdom knows its stillness, Then it can be well bound.

This mind is difficult to tame, Causing the sense faculties to be turbulent. The wise person holds it well, Able to reach the other shore.

This mind is never satisfied; Only the rope of contentment can bind it. One who skillfully controls that mind, Is called a wise person in the world.

This mind, focusing on objects of desire, Gives rise to love and delight. Wholesome actions can calm and remove it; Doing evil makes it increase.

If a person's mind is still, They see all desires as poison. The foolish indulge their mind, Enjoying them as something beautiful.

This mind only creates; That karma then follows accordingly. Arising from the sense faculties and objects, It causes a corresponding union.

The wise person, knowing this, Abandons it and attains peace and ease. All forms, when seen, are the same; Why then give rise to different concepts?

All realms of form, Because they are causes, disrupt the mind. One who skillfully tames that mind, Then abandons all faults.

Like a single grain seed, Gives rise to form, scent, and difference. Because of various combinations, Each arises according to the mind.

Like the world’s craftsmen, Who skillfully construct mechanisms. Relying on the true Dharma to govern the mind, One then always abides in peace and joy.

Sense objects pull the mind; The foolish give rise to pleasure. Wisdom has great power, Quickly causing it to become pure.

Again, that mind moves and turns, Pervading the aggregates and elements. And in those three states of existence, Because there is no true vision.

Again, like the great ocean, Where wind strikes and waves surge and boil. So too, the mind and conditions are combined, Flowing and turning with the world.

Wholesome karma leads the mind, Certainly bringing about an excellent result. One should practice wholesome conduct, And no longer create any evil.

When the mind corresponds to stillness, It is like water unmoved by wind. Everything arises from causes and conditions, Following the karma to which it goes.

This mind is extremely swift; In an instant it goes and returns. Sometimes it focuses on the heavens, Sometimes it heads toward hell.

The mind can cut off all evil, And can also create all good. It leads to the door of liberation. Thus is the mind described.

This mind is the most light and agile; There is none that surpasses it. If not skillfully guarded, It always clings to desire.

This mind, in a moment, Can create wholesome and unwholesome karma. Its nature is originally light and moving; Seeking it, it cannot be found.

This mind—how it comes is unknown; Going, what is seen? When conditions combine, it temporarily exists; When conditions disperse, it has no abode.

This mind is not an accumulation; Nor is it long-lasting. It does not correspond to a grasping; Nowhere is it seen.

“Mind” is also just a conventional name; It arises from the combination of conditions. Cow dung and a wish-fulfilling jewel— These two are also thus. The form-faculty and so on, Each arises from consciousness. One never sees a single dharma, That is obtained without combination.

Thus, those states, Are difficult for sentient beings to cut off and abandon. If one abides in the true Dharma, What is there to do with desire?

This mind is extremely dangerous, Has great power, and is hard to tame. It delights in creating karma; Foolish people have no awareness.

Because of creating various karmas, This becomes the cause for the cycle of rebirth. Within the three states of existence, They suffer for a long time.

Like being afflicted by wind-type diseases, One does not die and sink into evil paths. But the defects of greed, etc., Will definitely cause one to fall into hell.

The mind’s defects are the greatest; It constantly creates various evils. Wind disease is also not good; One should cultivate supreme conduct.

Wind-type diseases and so on can be cured; When the body perishes, they also scatter. But the disease of greed is not so; It remains for hundreds of thousands of lifetimes.

Know that the disease of greed, etc., Differs from wind-related ailments. One who skillfully cultivates supreme conduct, Can abandon the defect of greed.

This mind is like a skilled physician, Who skillfully treats defects of the mind. It is not like that of the world, Which only heals bodily ailments.

If the mind gives rise to wholesome reflection, Then no defilements arise. The foolish, without the true Dharma, Fall into dangerous paths.

If a person delights in meditation, Relying on the stillness of the mountains and forests, The fool, not being calm, Gives rise to much conflict and discord.

This mind is like a painter, Depicting all kinds of images. All these images are created by it, Circulating through the five realms of rebirth.

Worldly painting, though skillful, Depicts hundreds of thousands of kinds of things. The painting of karma is extremely vast, With the three realms as its canvas.

It paints numerous sentient beings, Flowing through the five realms of rebirth. Because karma is vast, It pervades everywhere.

Again, that painter-mind, Can paint the entire net of karma. All sentient beings in the world, Are all bound by it.

Again, wind, rain, smoke, and dust, Can all damage that painting. But for hundreds of thousands of eons, The painting of karma always remains as it is.

The great earth can be scattered and destroyed, The waters of the sea can also dry up. Only the painting of karma endures forever, Appearing everywhere. All karma always accompanies one; Its result never differs.

Sentient beings indulge their minds, Wandering through the realms of rebirth. If a person’s mind clings to pleasure, Seeking the states of desire, And does not cut off unwholesome karma, They will certainly fall into suffering. Therefore, one should restrain the mind, For it is extremely evil and frightening.

Delighting in the union with desired objects, The poison of craving constantly fills one. Not considering the danger, They constantly pursue desires. When pleasure ends, suffering follows; They themselves experience their own result.

If a person fears evil paths, Their mind becomes constantly calm. Because of that calm, They grow in the life of wisdom.

This mind has great power, Violent and evil, difficult to guard. The wise person skillfully tames it, And attains freedom from all worry and fear.
