Chapter 15: Confession of Transgressions

Driven by their own thoughts, people constantly do evil deeds. Foolish and ignorant, they only feel regret later—but it’s useless. Living beings create all sorts of wrongs, and they all suffer the painful results. Therefore, one should avoid wrongdoing and always seek the joyful fruit of good actions.

A small offense at first leads to a dangerous path later. Foolishness clouds the mind; after slipping, they fall again into the same trap. If you don’t guard against even small misdeeds, they become the cause of hell. Like a tiny spark that can burn down a whole forest.

From wrongdoing, you fall into lower realms, suffering immense pain. How can someone who treats themselves like an enemy ever find peace? If people commit evil, they never know true happiness. Those who truly want joy should cultivate wholesome deeds.

Doing good brings praise; doing evil invites contempt. Cultivating virtue is hard; how can wrongdoing be easy? If you see others breaking the rules and feel bad joy in your heart, your lack of wisdom will make you suffer even more than they do.

If people pile up evil deeds, they will reap the bitter harvest. This suffering is unbearable—so do not do wrong. Because evil acts inevitably bring their own punishment, avoid them! If you don’t commit the act, you won’t bear the result.

If you aren’t afraid of wrongdoing, you’ll be drawn to bad friends. The fruit of your actions is yours alone; no one else tastes it for you. Good deeds attract good results; evil deeds attract evil results. If you create many offenses, goodness has no place in you.

If people cling to harmful views, they spin out more and more wrongs. No sword, no club, no pit of fire is as terrible as that. If you let go of all evil and always cultivate good, your body, speech, and mind will be pure—Enlightenment won’t be far away.

Those who delight in evil will suffer severe pain. By doing evil, can you ever get a happy result? If you enjoy doing good, you gain the highest joy. This goodness isn’t a cause of suffering; there’s no confusion about who receives it.

Since beginningless time, doing good brings happy results. Plant the cause of evil, and you’ll surely harvest bitter fruit. Doing good attracts good friends; committing sin attracts evil companions. Hating and envying virtuous people—that leads to falling into lower realms.

If your heart delights in virtue, you distance yourself from all wrongdoing. For such a person, Enlightenment is as close as the palm of their hand. In everything you do, let the beginning, middle, and end be good. That brings happiness. Turn away from this, and it won’t.

So, turn away from sin; let goodness flow continuously. Those who reject evil constantly enjoy true happiness. Through endless cycles of birth and death, again and again, people pay for their wrongs. Fools, driven by ignorance, never grow weary in this.

Driven by desire, they commit evil, unaware of the future pain. A moment of shallow pleasure brings long-lasting suffering. Those who love doing wrong are despised by everyone. Therefore, abandon evil; don’t let virtue decay.

Harmful things lead to no lasting good, only the worst suffering. Therefore, wise people always keep away from wrongdoing. If you have a heart of compassion, you won’t create offenses. Evil brings its own disaster; if you don’t act, you don’t receive.

Always doing evil, following false teachers and false teachings— if you let go of those two, you’ll live well on the true path. Fools don’t realize this; they love doing harmful deeds. If you abandon these mistakes, you constantly dwell in higher realms.

If you delight in doing evil, you’ll definitely be dragged by your karma. Without fear of the next life, you waste the precious chance of being human. If you fear wrongdoing, you’ll focus on doing good. Such a person moves toward Enlightenment and gains the highest joy.

If you can let go of mistakes and cultivate good actions, you will be truly blessed—the best fortune in this world. Whoever masters their senses earns the respect of the world. Once they finish this life, they are born in the heavenly realms.

If you lack merit and do nothing that is good from start to finish, your crimes keep growing, and you fall into hell. If you create a mass of offenses, you bring yourself the bitter result. Do good—as you see—and you’ll surely receive a happy result.

Like seeds that aren’t good, they produce a dangerous harvest later. Just as you act, so the result matches—cause and effect are perfectly alike. All beings fall into lower realms because wrongdoing calls them there. Like a fish swallowing a hook, there’s no escape for no reason.

Wrongdoing is the root of all suffering—cut it off completely. Living beings are always stained by it, like a tool covered in dirt. Practice what is wholesome with steady joy—it can destroy all evil deeds. Like pressing sesame seeds: the flower breaks, but the fragrance remains.

Constantly chasing the five pleasures leads to distraction, no patience, laziness, and false speech. Such a person will surely lack genuine goodness. If you commit evil, it’s like a long dark night. If you live in goodness, it’s like the rising sun.

If you don’t feel envy, that’s a pure and wholesome life. Ignorance drives people to many wrongs, and they are always angry. Like a boat carrying a light load floats easily to its destination, if your burden of wrongs is light, you won’t drown in evil.

Stay away from bad friends, and you’ll always find happiness. If you follow them, you’ll face all kinds of dangers. Understand cause and effect well, and avoid even subtle mistakes. Such a person is not stained by wrongdoing, like space untouched by mud.

Hear what you haven’t heard; remember what you’ve learned. Even those who fall to lower realms can be reborn in heaven— how much more those who are truly wise?
