> Chapter 26: Meditation

> If a person cultivates meditative concentration, Without clinging to wisdom, They should steadily focus the mind, And nurture a clear, joyful intention. Dwelling well in a unified state of mind, Free from conflicts and faults, Released from all fears— This is called peace. When the mind rests in one point, All doubts dissolve, Pure as refined gold— This is called peace. When a person's mind grows still, And the senses do not scatter, They steadily advance toward enlightenment— This is called peace. Because the mind abides in one state, They delight in practicing concentration, And constantly attain The joy of deep meditative absorption. Enjoying solitude in quiet places, Always cultivating that supreme concentration, They come to know that exquisite joy Which surpasses the worldly realm. With such a pure mind, Always resting in one state, They escape the net of faults And reach the highest stillness. When the mind is fixed on one object, And the five senses are well controlled, With the water of wisdom they quench The burning harm of craving's fire. Always present and abiding, In pure and wondrous joy, By freeing themselves from that craving, They enjoy bliss without end. As scattered, distorted thoughts Arise everywhere, One who is skilled in sustaining concentration Stays aligned with a single state. This supreme meditation Leads to the city of liberation, Destroying the armies of confusion— Therefore, one should practice it. Firmly grounding themselves in concentration, They tame the wild horse of the mind, Leaving behind all sorrow and defilement, Attaining the highest peace. One who skillfully practices meditation, Free from greed and content with little, Receives such excellent rewards That they cannot be fully described. Thus, with diligent practice, Abiding in single-pointed mind, They transcend the stream of birth and death And reach the place of no disappearance.
